New Yorker Article about Oberlin

I just received word that the Oberlin faculty committee is still looking into the matter of Joy Karega. She will not be teaching at Oberlin in the fall and is on paid leave. As of the end of last year, I was advised that she still had two years on her teaching contract, so if they had terminated her, they probably would have had to pay her anyway.

President Marvin Krislov announced that he will leave the campus at the end of June, 2017 without giving a specific reason. The Trustees are currently meeting to create a Presidential Search Committee to succeed him. Meanwhile, as noted above, Prof. Joy Karega, whose Facebook posts up for two years included appalling antisemitic content, and who was on a tenure track, is now on paid leave in this final of her three-year contract, and not teaching Oberlin students. The decision process on her relationship to the college has taken an inordinate amount of time, beyond the stated timeframe for such decisions.

This two-hour unedited video (!) gives you an inside look at a symposium on Sept 22, called “Creating a Hate-Free Campus through Civil Discourse.” It was created for students by Oberlin chapter of Alums for Campus Fairness, with 3 speakers on topics related to Antisemitism, identity, self-confidence and more. The college would not cosponsor it, so it was held off-campus. Each speaker takes 30 minutes each. The final 40 minutes are a Q&A for students. https://vimeo.com/184609896

Today, Oberlin dismissed assistant professor Joy Karega. They called her anti-Semitic. They did the right thing.
