Hey, I am a junior girl and am extremly interested in FSU. Would I fit in with a lot of florida natives... is the atmosphere a lot different than New York? How is Tallahassee... I want to visit but I want to make 100% sure that I am highly interested first. My grades can get me into FSU or maybe even the Honors College. Things I love about it, the sense of community, school spirit and pride, florida, sports, and always having something to do. Many people look at me like I am crazy when I want to say FSU, but UF and University of Miami don't interest me as much as FSU does.* And I could get into the others, so its not like FSU is the school I am left with. Reply please:)

There are people from all over at FSU. FL is overall laid back place so fashion is vastly different here as well as how easy going people seem to be. Tally is kind of boring though compared to the main/major cities in FL. There are gorgeous beaches within a 2-2.5 hour drive so take those opportunities to visit some of the beaches. Football season is intense and taken very seriously. The games are hella fun to go to minus the few drunks. It’s easy to meet people here bc of all the events on campus and I find majority of students to be friendly and willing to engage in conversation.
I highly recommend visiting for at least a week to get a proper feel for it as it’s far from home and the vibe is totally different. You seem outgoing and ready for a big move so I think you’ll be fine socially. The w/ends are mostly students going to clubs and/or doing local active things (like going to the Rez or sinkholes) or taking little road trips. The weekdays there are random events going on around campus you just need to keep up w what’s happening as a lot of events aren’t usually announced.
As long as you make an effort you’ll find the transition easy.

As for my fashion… haha sweatpants and hoodies for winter nothing fancy. A week is a good idea to completely understand where I would live for the next four years. And beaches are that far away:(… I guess I would have to deal. Is Tallahassee a better place to live in than Gainesville? Meeting people I think I will do fine. But every time I mention Fsu people kind of think why the hell would you want to go there. Does FSU not have a high level of education or is it just underrated.

it could be because many people up north have never heard of FSU or it is not very ‘prominent’ on a countrywide basis.

Here in Florida UF is more popular than FSU because many believe it is better because of its ranking, rigor and reputation… that may be true but FSU just trails Florida in many categories.

I like to think of it like Harvard (UF) vs Brown University (FSU)… Harvard has that reputation of being the best, but Brown is a ivy league school and is right behind harvard (in some cases even better)… maybe that helps you understand.

Oh that makes a lot of sense. Well thank you for the comparison, and when I am done with college I want to live in Florida. So I guess it would not be a disadvantage.

There are plenty of New Yorkers in Florida. I am one of them, though I was raised in Florida. The Florida panhandle is more “southern” than the rest of the state, but the Tallahassee metro area is more cosmopolitan than the surrounding area.

You’ll fit right in. But in winter you have to wear socks with the flipflops. :)

I’ve met people from New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Massachusetts, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Arkansas, and a couple other states. And it’s not like I’ve asked all that many people that I’ve met where they were from.

Tallahassee kinda sucks, because it’s a larger city but feels so much like a small town in that there isn’t that much to do, but FSU’s good.

I wouldn’t worry so much about fitting in, since anyone can fit in and it’s really up to you to find something you’re comfortable with and is right for you. Heck, I didn’t feel like I really fit in at FSU at first, and I’m from Florida.

As an actual FSU grad I can tell you the rigor is the same. FSU also leads UF in many categories.
