New!

Hey guys! I finally managed to solve the issue with the confirmation email, for some strange reason I wasn't recieving it but after changing emails for the 50th time I finally recieved a confirmation link. Anyway, Ive been reading this forum for a while now, but finally I decided to join in the fun! Hehe. Im an international from Lima-Peru and got into UVa this year for the class of 2010!

After looking at the millions of "chances!" threads I gotta say Im proud of going to UVa haha, most people here have amazing stat's and are clearly very intellectually gifted people. Believe it or not, when I applied to UVa I didn't realize the caliber of the university. For people outside the US the only universities that really stick out are the Ivy's basically, and since the brother of a friend of mine went to UVa and told me good things about it, I decided to apply as well. Now that I have read numerous forums and rankings on UVa however, I'm thrilled to go there, because I have finally learned that the university is so great.

The day I recieved my acceptance email from UVa I had also gotten acceptance letters from Northeastern and Boston U, and to tell you the truth..I wasn't very excited haha. Clearly that was stupid because if I could go back in time with the information I have now..I'd have jumped all over the room! Anyway I have always wanted to say that to someone..I guess its you guys :P

Well just wanted to say hi to all of you and say that the forums are great and very useful. Ill post my stat's so that some people can see for an international student (not that exciting really).

-SAT I: M: 700, R: 570, W: (520) -->yup i screwed reading and writting
-SAT II: M IC: 710, Physics: 710, Spanish: 760
-Full IB courses: Higher level physics, english A1 and economics

GPA: Not too good in my Sophomore year. Junior year was the "Recovery year", around a 3.3-3.4 ish. Senior year will

have 6 AP Classes out of 7 and I WILL work my butt off.

NOTE: Consider that I have moved here less than 2 years ago, and english being my 7th language. I have had a huge

progress in many fields, I really hope colleges will consider it.

My dad has worked at UVA for a month, together with the Physics department, he also knows the Department chair and I

could easily get VERY good recommendations from MIT/Yale/Oxford Graduates.

First person in my family to go to college in the USA.

Good Background, nice EC's, I don't know my SAT scores but I took them today, and it was not too bad.
I guess around a 1900-2000, but it was the first time taking them for me, with no preparation.
I still have time for that.

Do you think that with improvement in GPA and SAT, considering being "new" to the country, and very hard courseload,

i'll be able to get in ?

Oh and please don't hesitate in giving me some advice for my Senior year.

Aless2010, welcome to UVA! :D

surreale, quit shopping your "chances" thread around.

Hey Surreale, I think you have some decent chances to get into UVa definitely. Here's the thing, UVa wants diversity, thats why they always accept 625 international students each year..I think its 625 at least hehe. You have an IMPRESSIVE background, I mean you can bring more diversity to the university than another 10 students put together, and that I think is what they are looking for in internationals. Moreover, the 2 most important things UVA looks at is your course work and GPA. Your courses are challenging, with a lot of AP's which is great, however, the only place I see that could be your weakness is your GPA. My average GPA weighted is a 3.9, but removing 9th grade it goes up to about a 4.15, putting me in the top 5% of my class. Also, I have an A average in my 3 higher level's, and since these HL's are the most important, then I think thats a major plus.

Given that my SAT overall was 1790, a 1900-2000 is definitely more than enough, and according to UVa, SAT's are 2nd priority behind grades and course load. Once again your background is amazing, and your taking challenging courses. Bring your GPA up as much as you can, and Im pretty sure your in. The only 2 other people that got in from all of Peru were the valedictorian and salutatorian of my highschool, so GPA is a major deal for UVa i'd say, aside from that your a great candidate, just raise your GPA as much as possible.

While your post has good intentions, Aless, I have to disagree with much of the content. Regardless, welcome to UVA! You're going to love it.

Aless2010, bienvenidos a UVA. I love it when international students come to the University. You guys always add cool flavor to the school.

By the way, did you know that UVA's first Latino international student came in 1827, when Simon Bolivar's nephew (and adopted son) Fernando decided to attend UVA over West Point? In La Casa Bolivar (the language dorm where everyone is immersed in Spanish), you can find the portraits of both Simon and Fernando Bolivar. The paintings were gifts to the University by the government of Venezuela.

Hehe I'm just mentioning the things I found were important by looking at the various dude's that got rejected :P At least from an international point of view hehe, like they say...there is no perfect equation to find the accept/reject decision :P

Thanks cavalier302! Yea people have told me that UVa is just amazing in almost every sense of the word, can't wait for August! :D

Aless, congratulations and I'm glad you're happy to come here. My instructor in econ201 this past semester, who is my friend, also comes from Lima, Peru. He's getting his Phd in Econ right now. :)

Lol wow Globalist, you're amazing. =P

Aless I had the same problem with confirmation and just HAD to reply to your post. After changing emails for the 10th time and msg to admin, I finally got the email.. three days later. O_o

Melli, hahaha...I know that stuff because my 2nd year I used to live in La Casa Hispanica (that was its old name before being called La Casa Bolivar). I always thought it was cool that Simon Bolivar who is known as the "George Washington of South America" thought so highly of Jefferson that he wanted to send Fernando to UVA.
