Hey I’m new to the Boston College posts, but I was wondering how big the whle jesiut this was on campus. I’m not Christian and it doesn’t bother me at all, but I was just wondering…Should I even consider applying wiht low 1300’s sat and like 4.3 weighted gpa?

Actually... i'm a senior and I applied to BC for Fall 2005. I'm Jewish, although that very religious, and my SAT scores are a 1280 with a 94.5 weighted gpa. I still haven't heard a decision from them but I'm hoping for the best. Supposively the whole religion thing is played up a whole lot more than what actually exists. If it doesn't matter to you then I don't think you should have a problem.

You should definitely apply, but keep in mind many of my friends were deferred/rejected with 1300's. I may be one of them :( We'll see in April! BC applications spiked 10-15% this year, making it the most competitive year in BC's history. Unfortunately, it keeps getting harder and harder to get in every year. My advice: study for the SATs, since they place a lot of emphasis on them during the admissions process. Good Luck!

Thanks guys, I'm also considering ED at BC, but I don't know for sure, I'm still deisiing if that the school for me! RideBoarder and Jewls I wish you luck! Where else did you apply?

No problem. BC has Early Action, but not Early Decision. I would definitely recommend applying EA, because you have nothing to lose (its not binding). It's much harder to get in Early (they take the most qualified students, 1400+). I was deferred with a 1310. I also applied to Yale, BU, NYU, GW, Northeastern, Loyola, Providence, and Fordham. Where else you applying?

actaully I'm a junior but I will apply to, BU, Emory,WashU, George Washington, possibly NYU, UPenn I like alot, but it won't happen, Pepperdine, UF, Rice, Vandy...that's it mostly. I have the same SAT score as you, but I'll see after the New SAT (my verbal is low) Thanks, I'm definetly looking into BC though

Hey outburst, that's cool that you're considering BC. You should definitely apply considering that BC is Early Action not Early Decision. This means that it's non-binding if you do get in early.

Also, have you tried taking the ACT's? I know that Boston College requires SAT I plus (i think) 3 SAT II tests OR just the ACT. I sent in just my ACT scores because I did better on this test than the others. Maybe you could try the ACT's and see if you do better on them. If you do, then you'll chances of getting admitted will definitely go up!

Good luck w/ the college search! My advice would be practice, practice, practice to improve those test scores (Not that your test scores are bad, because they aren't at all. It's just that they mean a WHOLE lot more than you might think) and apply EARLY (especially if it's only Early Action). It's great knowing whether or not you got into a school before Christmas!

A lot of my friends say that BC is extremly hard to get into, I was compeitative, but I knew it was no Harverd. We'll see what happens, What's your GPA RideBoarder, Oh I failed to mention I'm Indian so I don't know how thats gunna play in the admin. process at BC, Do you think it'll help or hurt?

I agree with you Rovee, that's definetly why I want to get everything out of my way, I'm looking into taking the ACT, if I do well then I wouldn't have to worry about the SAT II's, especailly because I don't ahve any done yet. I'm more of a math/science person anyways. Thanks so much, Are you a senior Rovee?

Hey, no prob outburst. Yeah, I'm a senior and I've been accepted to Boston College Early Action. Dude, for me the ACT's were so much easier than the SAT's but that's because correcting bad grammar/mistakes is easy for me and I like the reading parts. :-) The science part on the ACT is pretty easy too and this is coming from someone who really isn't a math/science person. Just do like a couple of practice tests and you should get the hang of it.

Boston College loves all things AHANA (Asian, Hispanic, African American, Native American) so I'm pretty postive that being Indian won't hurt you. If anything, it'll probably give you a better shot at getting in because they like URM (and I'm pretty sure that Indians are a minority at BC). I'm Filipino and I've been sent all of these AHANA mailings and sometimes its been a little repetitive, but hey, its cool.

Oh, and for the record, I know of a girl who got into Boston Colleg Early Action w/ a 1290 SAT.

But, on the flip side, the average SAT score for this year's Early Action Admitted pool was a 1397.

Gosh, I hope I do well on this...I really like BC, I prob but it im my top 3 but it is def a reach. How did your friend get in with a 1290-still good, but did she have sports or amazing EC's?

Well, I don't really know the girl. I met her at a Boston College reception for admitted students. She said that she plays water polo, and she goes to a Jesuit high school. But other than that, I really don't know what her "hook" was. Maybe she had a good essay or good EC's. But it seemed like she REALLY wanted to go to BC so maybe she emphasized that in her application. Plus, she visited the campus so maybe they remember things like that.

What other schools are a part of your top 3?

Emory, UPenn, and BC as of now, but I'm pretty close to giving up on UPenn, it's not happening..I was going to ED there but then I was like, There is no way I'm going to waste my ED on one school that I'll prob get rejected from.

Those are all outstanding schools. But my last word of advice (and I don't mean to sound like an old geezer!) is that you shouldn't underestimate yourself. I know that it's really hard not too after reading all of these posts from people w/ insane test scores, EC's, ect. (Lol, I swear, CC was like the pin that burst my naive little bubble!), but you still have time to improve and make yourself a better applicant (namely test scores.) Once you've got those annoying things done and out of the way, let yourself shine in your applications.

I had really big ambitions going into this college thing. I was stoked that I got into BC and now I've received a likely letter at Wellesley so I can't complain about that. But irony of all ironies, I might decide to go to my state school, the University of Washington. You can never know what is going to happen so (ok, now I promise this is my final advice! haha.) keep an open mind and realize that it is the person that makes the experience. You seem like you'll succeed anywhere you go so again, good luck w/ the college search!

(D*mn, thank god I'm a senior! LoL. I don't think I could go through all this again!)

Thanks for the encourgement, as you, I lost confidence after coming to this site, lol, I mean I will still try my best will the test scores, my gpa and ecs are good, Is there a reason that you are wanting to go to state school?

ps, wellesley is amazing, do you mid posting ur stats.

Umm... dude, I seriously made it difficult for myself when I applied to a bunch of schools. Anyways, UW, BC, and Wellesley are my top 3 schools. Tulane (because of the Honors program and 1/2 tuition) and all of the other ones that I applied to follow.

I got into this really competitive freshman business program at UW which is mainly why I'm seriously considering attending. Plus, based on U.S. News and World Report (so take it for what its worth), UW's business school is ranked higher than CSOM, BC's b-school. Also, UW's business school has one of the best programs for int'l business which is what I'm really interested in so that's pretty exciting. I've also considered joining a sorority and UW is the only school that I've applied to that has a greek system (I'm not sure if Tulane has one). Sororities won't be a deciding factor, but if things go well (like if I get into UW's Honors Program and if I get a full ride scholarship), I can see myself attending the school. Plus, there's the whole instate tuition thing, but like w/ the sorority thing, this isn't that decisive of a factor. It's still a pretty good plus.

My brother's friend also pointed out to me something important about going to school in Boston that I've never realized, but is something definitely worth considering. (It also ties into why I might choose my state school.) I have to get going now so I'll try to post later, or maybe I'll just PM or IM you.

Tulane definately has a big greek scene, just to let u know. What is it that your brother pointed out about boston?

outburst,
I have about a 93 cumulative GPA, and a 95 junior and senior year, with the most challenging courses. Don't be too intimidated by the kids on this site lol, I know the feeling. It seems like everyone here is more qualified than I am :)

Hey thanks for the info USChopeful!

Ok, well I've always thought of Boston as being the best college town in the nation and I'm sure all of you guys have thought the same way. I mean, jeeze, you've got like a quarter of a million college kids living there right? So I would totally attest to Boston being the one of the best places to go to school. However, what my brother's friend pointed out was that all of these college students means A WHOLE lot of competition. Competition for jobs, internships, you name it. Boston has so many amazing schools (Harvard, M.I.T., BU, BC, etc.) but that also means that there are a ton of amazing students trying to get the same thing. And frankly, Boston College just doesn't compare to Harvard or M.I.T. when it comes to reputation. Now, I've heard people saying that Boston College has a great name in Boston and I do not know the hard facts connecting BC students to internships, but honestly, the competition in Boston must be crazy.

I've wanted to go to Boston College since I first found out about before high school. I've always thought of it as my #1 school just as I've always thought of the University of Washington as the ultimate safety for me. But for me, personally, the UW is the best school in Seattle and the surrounding region. Furthermore, I've been invited to a program at UW's Business School that is open to the very best of the students who put Business Administration down as a major. So, in theory, I would be one of the top 25-30 students at the best school in the region. So when it comes to internships (for law school) and job opportunities (if I wanted to stick w/ business), things would be a lot easier (less competitive) and more beneficial if I chose to go to UW.

I'm the type of person where, for the most part, I know what I want to do, or at least, I know where I want to go. I've come to realize that it's very important to consider the future because in reality, your undergrad years are just something you have to do in order to get to where you want to go, and for me that's grad school. What do grad schools want? High GPA, high test scores, and, the icing, experience. I think that college is all that you make of it and frankly, succeeding to the next level sometimes means being the best.

So I guess I have to decide between going to a school that will offer me this opportunity, to be, well, part of the best, or a school that yes I think is amazing, but is also a place where I would be just average and where I'd be going against students from other, and frankly more reputable, schools.

Anyways, that is just my two cents of what is going on in my life. Deciding what school to go to (well, first off, getting into a school!) takes a lot of consideration and sometimes I wish I could see into the future and find out if I made the right decision. Lol, and then I'm throwing Wellesley into the mix, so yeah, I've never in my life felt this indecisive. Oh well, I hope you guys appreciate what I had to say and I'd love to hear what you guys are going through as well (i.e. what school you're leaning towards and why).

(And if you actually read all that, lol... well, I'm impressed and flattered!)
