Newhouse Admissions

Hello everyone, I'm currently a Junior, and am interested in applying to the Syracuse University Newhouse school but for journalism. What kind of scores and gpa do they generally want? What would be their average? I have heard it has an extremely low acceptance rate, but cannot find any actual statistics online. Thank you.

My son was just accepted to Newhouse ED;
GPA 3.7
SAT’s 1950
SAT II: Math I 690, Lit 670 (not required)
4 years Spanish
active in Synagogue (teaching assistant)
active in HS admissions committee and student touring (independent Quaker school)
Good luck!

Thank you very much!

i was just accepted with a 3.8 uw gpa, 2010 SAT (1350 out of 1600), rigorous classes with AP credits, and lots of journalism experience, plus more stuff. i didn’t do an interview either and was still accepted to newhouse.

it’s very competitive, but SU makes a serious effort at looking beyond your grades and SAT. don’t get me wrong; your grades and SAT are extremely important, but they don’t have to be as perfect as some might expect given the extraordinary competition. my friend got in last year with a 1580 SAT score because she’s also an excellent writer and very passionate.

i suppose what i’m trying to say is average statistics aren’t particularly telling about how the application process works here.

We had hired a college counselor who called Newhouse to get their stats. My daughter only took the ACT and the average for Newhouse was 31 and GPA 3.7. SU is a touch school, the more interest you show can help (interviews, visits, emails to your admission rep), none required, but if you are borderline they can help and they absolutely will look at a body of work if you have one. My DD applied for TRF and she had done a couple of videos that they recommended she send in. Good luck!

i just got accepted into Newhouse with 1910 SAT, 3.8 GPA, and i’m also the managing editor of the newspaper at my school and i take AP courses.

i think its important to just keep your grades up, but also show that you’re interested in journalism and newspaper! also apply early decision because it helps a lot :)

I hope I can get in ^_^
