Newhouse School of Communication - opinions please!

I am high school senior and will be graduating May of 2009. I am seriously considering Syracuse University (that is, if I get in) due to its incredible communications school. I have already visited the university and toured the Newhouse School, but I would like to hear anyone else's opinion of the school (particulary if you are a current student or alumnist of the university). Being from North Carolina, it would definitely be a huge climate change!! I'm a little worried I won't be able to adapt to the cold! :)

Also, I am worried about my chances of getting in. I am an all-A student (except for a couple Bs my freshman year) and will have taken 6 AP courses upon graduation. I received a 29 composite score on the ACT. I am also the executive producer of my school news show. (just naming a few things that I think would be important to the university.) All that being said, Newhouse is extremely competitive...so if you have any feedback as to what you think my chances are of acceptance please let me know!

I would bet that if your overall GPA is over a 3.8 and with the solid grades in your sophomore and junior year, you would get accepted.

Current student, here. Your chance of admission looks really good.

I love SU and I love being in the Newhouse School. The education, experience, resources and alumni connection make me feel confident about my career path (public relations).

As far as the cold climate goes, that's a common (and, in my opinion, very minor) concern. Coming from Southern California, I was really concerned about the weather. But, to be honest, I don't think it's bad at all. Look at everything SU and the Newhouse School have to offer you; don't just base your decision on weather.

Thanks for your input! If you don't mind me asking, what other schools were you looking at during your college search, and why did you decide to go to Syracuse?

I decided on 'Cuse for Newhouse.
Didn't get into Northwestern ED. Waitlisted at Emory. Got into NYU, Lehigh, Miami, Mizzou for journalism. Wow, I'm only a junior and I'm already forgetting where I applied...I think that's it.

I love being a Newhouse student. Love my classes, love all the little tastes of the magazine world I get and I love my professors. If you know you love journalism and love the big school atmosphere of SU, then you're in luck.

I searched for colleges based on the fact that I wanted to be a journalist. Now looking back, sometimes I think I may have been more comfortable at a small liberal arts school. Still, I can't tear myself away from Newhouse.

My advice to prospective J students: you may not want to be a reporter, but chances are you'll have to learn how. Be prepared to learn things you thought (hoped) you'd never use. A j-school gives you the whole package.

I applied to Northwestern, Syracuse, and NYU for journalism. I didn't get into Northwestern (womp womp), so it was between SU and NYU. I had been looking at Newhouse since my sophomore year in high school. It's a great program and I loved my visit to SU, so for me, it was the obvious choice; I'm more than happy with my decision.

I am also looking at Syracuse for journalism. My biggest concern is that I have no experience in journalism, is this a big deal? Will it be too hard to succeed when I have never done it?

No way! You're in good company. A lot of kids come in with solid experience, a lot of kids edited their high school papers and a lot of kids just decided to give it a shot. By the time you all get to News205, the profs will level you out.

that's good news for me :). I'm about to be a Newhouse freshman. I've currently become very interested in the Sport management program though. Exactly how can I incorporate some of it into my newhouse curriculum?
