i heard that the acceptance rate for newhouse is only 10%, yet the average SAT is only 1300 which isn't that high...what makes it such a low acceptance rate...if I have a 1410 with good grades I would assume that would get me in, but the numbers just don't make sense

It's because the journalism school is disproportionally more prestigious than Syracuse as a whole. People will apply to Newhouse with the stats to get into Syracuse arts & sciences but be rejected, because Newhouse is just that much cooler than the rest of the university. LOL.

Anyway, on that note, when I visited Syracuse I wasn't initially too impressed. The current students didn't seem academic, and neither did the prospectives; but once I stepped into the Newhouse building, it was like I was at a different university. The current kids were quirky and enthusiastic, and the prospectives were actually asking interesting and intelligent questions.

A 1410 is a great SAT score for pretty much any college. I think the avg. SAT score for incoming freshman at Dartmouth is only 1350. For Newhouse it is 1250 (according to an info session I went to over the summer), which is still 100 pts higher than the avg. score for incoming freshman to the university as a whole, but you are well in the clear.

SAT isn't everything. And yes, the people in newhouse are generally higher achievers than other students in SU. But the 10% thing may not be correct. When I was accepted I was told it was a ten% acceptance rate also, but the admissions office says it's in the 20s.

Something I thought u should know:
I had the wrong idea of SU before I got here. Somewhere in the back of my mind I was worried that I was going to a weak school. I feared I might be surrounded by jocks and partiers with a few good students tossed in as if by accident. I knew newhouse was tops, but still in the back of my mind, I had the idea that SU on the whole was a weak school. In fact, I think at some point I thought that if they were really great students, they'd go to Yale and become journalists later.
Well now I'm finishing off my first semester in newhouse and the honors program. Boy was I wrong about SU. Of course it isn't a top-ten school, but to think of it like Uncle Joe's Howse of Edjukatin is way off the mark (ya, I'm definitely an academic snob, sorry). Turns out college isn't easy. Newhouse really isn't easy (spell a name wrong in a paper and they'll throw it out- school policy). I'm in the Honors Learning Community (which means most the kids on my floor are in honors) and I'm often surrounded by students who are way better than I am in school. Turns out straight As are pretty much impossible to maintain, and in a few courses great students are just happy to be passing. This school is what you make of it. Take tough classes, get involved in tough programs and it's definitely a challenge. For the many students on this site who, like me, hold the top 10 or twenty schools as something sacred, I hope this helps. And if I really am the only one with a hidden, snobby, dark side...whoops.

You definitely aren't! I have definitely really been torn about how impressed I was with Syracuse's j-school and how I felt the academics at Syracuse would be overall. I have thought a couple times about going someplace and not majoring in journalism, thinking that a "strong" program (read: not Syracuse) in the humanities would prepare me for a career as a journalist better than any j-school could.

It's definitely good to hear from an honors student that the university isn't easy, and that he's challenged academically. Your post actually made me feel a lot better about facing possible rejections from more selective schools AND about choosing Syracuse over them...

o good! what a relief!
Btw, I'm a "she". My name's Talie. Feel free to facebook.

talie is right. don't feel weird about coming here-- i know i did at first and fell into that "i only came here for newhouse" trap. come with an open mind. there will be things you hate about this place at first, because because the school is so big i guarantee you'll find your niche sooner rather than later

good luck everyone

p.s. are you the talie i sat next to you at the stat final yesterday?!

haha probably (I'm the only Talie at SU, I think. The real name's Natalie, but no one has ever called me that nor will they ever call me that). Are you Kevin's friend?

haha yeah!! i friended you on facebook. we'll talk there.

The average score at Dartmouth for the incoming class is a 1432 (M+V), not a 1350. The median is a 1480. Not sure where you got your info groovin. 1350 is the 25% score (so 75% have above 1350).

I just checked Princeton Review. Guess I should use the common data sets from now on, yeah?
