Newly Accepted with Questions!

I was accepted back in December into the Pre-Health Program and recently payed my admission deposit! I have a few questions about housing and social life WITHOUT rushing.

I started working on my housing application and would like to live in the high-rises (Manning or Byrnes), but I applied mid/late October. Should I still be able get my preferred housing?

Also, I am NOT rushing. I have nothing against those who do, but I don't feel it is for me. I have lived in SC my whole life, but have grown to be very liberal and free-thinking and don't feel I would excel in a sorority. I was wondering if it is hard to get involved in school as well as a "night-scene" if you don't rush.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations! Don’t worry about not rushing–you’ll make tons of friends as long as you don’t stay in your room with the door shut all day. My best friends freshman year were the girls on my hall who didn’t rush since the rest of them were gone that whole time. There are over 300 clubs and organizations you can join. In addition to that, you can join a sorority or coed fraternity for service, your major, honors students, Christians, etc. and you don’t rush the same way that the other sororities and fraternities rush. They’re usually a lot less expensive and time consuming as well.

Housing priority is based on when you applied to the school, not when you applied to housing. You lose that priority if you apply for housing after May 31. Although October may seem early, the application becomes available at the beginning of August, and lots of people apply as soon as they possibly can. On the other hand, most people will apply to live in Clemson House and end up in the high rises or shoeboxes, so I wouldn’t be too worried if the high rises are your top choice.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks you! Yeah the main thing I was worried about is housing! I like the high rises for their location and am keeping my fingers crossed! (Hopefully the roommate I find will have applied earlier)

If you choose your own roommate, they take the average of the dates you two applied, so yes, that’ll help a little. I lived in Lever as a freshman and I liked how close it was to Hendrix, Schilletter, Redfern, Wendy’s, and a lot of my classes.

I don’t think you’ll have a problem getting into Manning or Byrnes - if you apply for Clemson House though you probably won’t get it. Like others have mentioned, there are tons of student organizations on campus and if you get involved and get to know the people in there (not just joining events from time to time but investing time/effort into them), it’ll be just as good as a fraternity or sorority. It’s all just about finding people on campus that you share interests with and whether it’s through Greek Life or student organizations, there are many ways to do that at Clemson.

Newly accepted and applying for housing. Submitted my application early November. My first choice is Clemson House, of course, but I know that’s unlikely. Any suggestions for a second choice? I don’t plan on joining a sorority and I’ll be a nursing major, so lots of studying…

A bunch of people (1,700 students) live in the High-Rises/Low-Rises (Mauldin, Byrnes, Manning, Lever) while the Shoeboxes is in a pretty awesome location just up the street from athletic facilities, Fike Recreation Center and the Union. Either of those locations would be a great second choice (depends what you want).

Whats the best place to live for freshmen? I am planning to join a sorority and want a social dorm life.

Clemson House, but everyone applies to live there. If you want to live with girls you can request Manning.

Clemson House is the nicest place to live but if you want a social dorm life I would not live there. Definitely try one of the High-Rises! (Byrnes/Manning/Lever)

Daughter wanted Clemson House but didn’t get selected…ended up in Shoeboxes…went from being terribly upset to really happy there. Great location…

Because Clemson House has some rooms that are suite/apartment style vs. a traditional room, people tend to stay in their rooms vs. getting out and socializing with each other. At least that’s my observation (I never lived there).

I was in a dorm last year and an apartment this year. I wouldn’t recognize the people who live in my building this year, but I could tell you who lived in which room on my floor last year and what sororities they were in. In a dorm, you see each other in the bathrooms and elevators, and you’ll eventually learn their names when you see them walk into certain rooms, so you get to know people better there.

What about the LLCs? My son will have the option of RiSE… is this something he should try to do?

I’d definitely recommend doing an LLC if you are interested. Great way to get to know people in your major (many times you take the same class sections etc…) and they offer other resources related to your major (tutoring, workshops etc…)

Given the numbers of wait listed people with good stats, for those that have been accepted can you share your GPA and test scores and your selected major?

My d was accepted in November - major wildlife and fisheries and accepted into Honors recently.
ACT 34
UW GPA 3.8
W GPA 4.6
School does not rank
15k merit scholarship

@Clemson9999 - My son (Fredericksburg, VA) received is acceptance package yesterday. We were surprised since so many of whose who were waitlisted had such awesome stats (probably means many will be called up from the wait list though so hang in there!). Son’s status are good, but we thought his test scores might hold him back. He was accepted to General Engineering - here are his stats:

ACT: 24 (28 Math, 28 Science). He has always had trouble testing to the level of his grades for some reason.
GPA: 4.0 UW and 4.48 W
Class Rank: 9 out of 409
5 AP Classes, rest advanced classes (no honors classes offered); one college class
Several technical classes: Technical Drawing, Engineering Drafting & Design, CAD Drafting & Design I and II (taken at Career & Technical Center). Also took exam for and and received “Certified Associate - Auto CAD” certificate as a Junior.
Lots of extracurriculars and community service, strong essay.

So far, the average test scores have not held him back; it seems like the schools he’s been accepted to so far have focused on his grades and class rank instead. He’s been accepted to WVU (Engineering), University of Tennessee (Engineering), University of Kentucky (Materials Engineering), James Madison University (Engineering), UNC Charlotte (Meteorology), and Old Dominion University (Engineering). He also applied to Virginia Tech but will not hear from them until end of March/early April.

Hopefully those on the waitlist will get called up. I know waiting is awful!

i was accepted in December and

uw GPA: 3.75
w GPA: 4.5

DS2 was accepted provisionally last July based off of his ACT score and profile. Acceptance was confirmed in December for Engineering.
