Newly appointed midshipman -- happy to provide information to prospective candidates

I have recently received an appointment from the Naval Academy and would be more than happy to answer any specific questions about the whole process. I used this website a lot when I was unsure about certain things throughout the whole process so I know how helpful it can be if utilized by prospective midshipmen. Needless to say, the process of applying to the service academies is trying, if not grueling, a challenge in and of itself.

I received an LOA so I know all about that, received a waiver for several things (pneumothorax, ADHD "academic skills defects", and my eyes), and am a recruited athlete. I am also a female so if you are a prospective female midshipman I'd be happy to let you know my take on everything through a girl's eyes.

If you would rather converse via email, you can reach me at ksn67@optonline.net. I will try my best to correspond as soon as I can. I hope this helps. Good luck to all who are applying and GO NAVY!

Wondered if you attended NASS last year?

ksn67 - thanks for your kind gesture. What sport are you being recruited for? My daughter will be one of your classmates and hopes to play tennis while there!

Womens Tennis? There isn't varsity womens tennis, only club level.

fligirl89 ...I never said she is playing vasity. I only said she hope to play tennis. USNA is currently building a new indoor tennis/ice rink facility and plans to take woman's tennis to Varsity status in the next year or two. At least that is what the AD told us this past year. I realize things can always change. We are hoping this comes true!

Is it promising to get two nominations for chances of an appointment? Have you ever heard of people getting two nominations, and not getting in? Note, my grades, extracurricular etc.. are good,

The more noms you have the more qualified you appear. A nomination is like a recommendation letter from some source saying that you are one of the most qualified people that they have found and they think that you will succeed at the academy based on what they have seen. If you get more than one than you are seen as the best out of more pools than one.

Yes, and some strong candidates, too. One here this year who had 3 ... 2 senators and her representative, too.

kudos ksn67! class of 2011!... RAH!

Im at NAPS right now.. so i'll see you at USNA!

Enjoy the rest of ur civilian life... seriously!

GO NAVY! RAH!

emm89, I did not attend Summer Seminar but I have heard only great things about it, although they say it is harder to get into than the Academy itself. If you can (some schools get out really late) I would recommend doing it because it shows interest and that is huge in admissions.

As far as your questions about nominations, I do know one boy who received two nominations in CT (a very competitive state) and did not get in for medical reasons. But I would say that, depending on how competitive your area is, getting two nominations is rare and thus a good indicator of your potential success at the Academy. In my case, I received a nomination from my Senator and then, due to my LOA (they do not give out more than one nomination to you if you have an LOA primarily to give other candidates a nomination), received a nomination from my Congressman for West Point.

jlr0313, I am being recruited for lacrosse, which is going varsity next spring.

navysailor2011, how do you like NAPS? Have you gone on the Candidate Visitation Weekend? I'm going to the Academy this weekend for the CVW.

ksn67...

NAPS is great... its given me an extra year to get ready for the academy, they try to make it like the academy here, but that only goes so far, you know what i mean? And I did attend a CVW last year I had some fun. You get to be "dragged" by a plebe, and you just do what he does pretty much. NAPS visited the academy for an entire week, so I got to spend alot of time at the academy. I spent my time with a plebe who went to NAPS also, we pretty much did what they did. Oh, and be sure to ask them alot of questions. Try to write them down, because chances are, your going to forget most of them when you get there. I know I did.

Congrats on being recruited for lacrosse, there is another girl here who is a recruit for lacrosse, I'll get you her email, she's pretty cool.

Best of luck to ya.

2011!! RAH!

What is CVW and how do I go to it?

A CVW is a candidate visitation weekend. You pretty much go and follow a midshipmen around for a couple of days to get more information on what it is like there. As far as I know you have to be invited to attend one, but I have heard of people requesting invitations and receiving them.

GLITTER-
The more nominations you have, not only does it help you look more qualified, but statistically it helps you because you have been added to one more pool of candidates for the academy to chose from. So say one of your nominating sources had kids with LOAs, you would still be competative in the other source's pool, it is a HUGE help.
