Newman Hall vs Hendrick House

Which dorm should I live in next year? I am debating between Newman Hall and Hendrick House East end. Newman Hall has larger rooms, but Hendrick house has semi-private baths? Which dorm is better? Also, is it possible to apply for both rooms now to reserve a spot but not sign the contract?

My D is a freshman living in Newman and she feels she couldn't have made a better decision. While the bathrooms are down the hall, every room does have a sink and large walk in type closet that you share with your roommate, otherwise it's a typical room with two beds (not bunks), desks, etc. Since Newman is smaller you get to know many of the residents and the dorm is quiet, even on Saturday night making studying and sleeping very easy. She also claims it's the closest dorm to the quad which is wonderful on cold winter days and yes there's AC. Just to let you know if interested apply soon as most residents stay 3-4 years. It's only about 30% freshman and she went on the waiting list in Feb. and didn't get a room until June.

Ok, Thank You

I guess I didn't see this post 'cuz I just started a new thread about Newman vs. Illilni Towers. I am hoping my D gets into Newman for the reasons midwest girl mentioned. I called Newman today and was told they already mailed out the "first batch" of contracts to all the applicants that signed up. They don't expect 100% compliance so they will be sending out the next batch soon. Do you know how many applicants were before your D applied? I'm told there are about 50 or 60 applications ahead of my D. Just wondering, since your D got off waiting list in June. I'm tempted to sign a lease with Illini since I'm not sure about Newman. I would prefer NOT to since it is alot more expensive at Illini.

My D had well over 60 people ahead of her. It may have been even closer to 100. Therefore she also signed a contract and believe it or not it was with Illini Tower. We kept our fingers crossed knowing she would lose her deposit at Illini if she got into Newman, but she knew she really wanted Newman. She called Newman every couple of weeks beginning in May and we never sent the first payment into Illini as we knew we would wait until the last minute, which I believe is July. In June she finally received the news she was hoping for and we contacted Illini Tower, where there was a large waiting list and they removed her name. She couldn't be happier with her decision and she will be living in Newman again next year along with most of the Newman Freshmen she has talked to. It will be nice when the addition is completed and they can take more residents. Good Luck.

Thanks midwestgirl
We are planning on visiting the other private housing complexes this weekend, just in case. I figured that the cost of attending Newman vs. U of I housing was approx. $570. Is this accurate? Thanks

Even though I'm not sure of the exact amount, your number sounds about right.
