News release about 2011 freshman class

[University of Alabama News Enrollment at Record High as UA Continues to Grow with Quality](http://uanews.ua.edu/2011/09/enrollment-at-record-high-as-ua-continues-to-grow-with-quality/)

I would really like to know the average ACT score and GPA of the entire freshman class. I would also like to know where we rank as far as enrollment of NMF students.

Wow! 182 NMF’s vs. last years 128 NMFs? Oklahoma is usually #1 in Publics for enrolling NMFs and they had 225 last fall. I’m thinking that UA’s probably going to vault up to #2 for public uni’s enrolling NMFs now, right?

UA2009: National Merit usually puts out their annual report at the end of October. The one on their site now is the one reflecting the HS graduating class of 2010. Once the new one is published the schools will be able to adjust their PR efforts :)

Thanks RobD

The fall 2011 freshman class – a record 5,772 students – entered the University with outstanding academic credentials.

“Once again this fall, we welcomed to campus the largest and most academically talented freshman class in our history,” said UA President Robert E. Witt. “We are pleased that excellent students are recognizing the quality and value of a University of Alabama education.”

Qualifications of the freshman class include:

* The class includes 182 National Merit Scholars and 30 National Achievement Scholars. Last year, with 128 National Merit Scholars, UA ranked 6th in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars.

 • Twenty-eight percent of the freshman class – 1,614 students – had a 4.0 or higher grade point average in high school.

 • The freshman class was drawn from a record 22,136 applicants, up over 200 percent since fall 2002. UA has become significantly more selective with 53 percent of applicants admitted for fall 2011, down from 85 percent in 2002.

That will probably come out soon, but I don’t know if the “average” will tell you much. I think knowing what the upper quartile is…and what the two middle quartile range includes can be more telling.

With that many NMFs enrolling, Bama has to move up in rank for publics. Moving up for all schools is hard since the ivies and other elites grab a bunch without any scholarships.

Enrollment at The University of Alabama reached a record 31,747 students this fall as the University continues to grow with quality.

This is NOT the undergrad number. This includes the grad school and the law school…and Bama has been recruiting aggressively for law and grad…especially grad…hence the strong int’l enrollment with its grad school.

Free tuition is a powerful motivator these days.

Indeed it is. Nonetheless, it’s hard to hide something that’s not living up to the expectations of those that took the bait. My little fish was grinning ear to ear last weekend…

A lot more than that get free tuition. About 500 frosh enroll each year with the presidential tuition scholarship.

Speaking of the Presidential Scholorship…has anyone received notification yet?

I think the scholarship office said that they will be processing them around this time…mid Sept…so it sounds like they will be coming soon.
