I am on my school's newspaper. Right now we're trying to up it's reputation and its relevance to the school, which is a goal for every paper.

Based on that, I'd suggest you write articles more about your school than about news in general. Kids can get that news in a lot of other papers. What you want to do is connect current articles to your school and the students in them, as well as report big news happening in the school.

Some examples for you: my school always does an article on new teachers at the beginning of the year, but my school is also smaller than most; when the school has mock elections, blood drives, or new clubs forming, the newspaper reports it; a new feature we may be adding this year is a sort of poll of students-pick an opinion question relating to current events and choose three or four students to give their answer (those are pretty popular in lesser-known real newspapers that I know of).

What we need are column ideas, really. Something a person writes every month, based on a schtick or theme. But I don't know what to write about!

Well the thing I mentioned before about surveying students on current events might be a good column. So would an advice column, written by a student who likes to help. Like before, the theme I would suggest your column focuses on is just the students and their lives. It will make your newspaper something your high school can relate to and so make it a bigger part of the school.
