i'm currently one of few kids in the running for class valedictorian....
i'm confident that I will be valedictorian (or at least tie with someone else for valedictorian) if i continue to take weighted classes to boost my gpa....
however, i've been pretty much guaranteed an editor position on the school newspaper (and a very good chance at editor-in-chief) if i take a non-weighted journalism class...
i'd be perfectly happy going in either direction
what is better for college application: class valedictorian or newspaper editor with a class rank of 3 or 4?

i forgot to mention this and i'm not sure if it's relevant but i'll mention it anyway....
i already have a lot of ECs and leadership in a few of them

Is there any possibility you can opt for the weighted class AND become newspaper editor? If not, I would go for the journalism class. When the numbers are that close, colleges rely on other factors to make their decisions. Valedictorian, as impressive as it seems, does not make that much of a difference. In fact, the Ivies consisently reject many each year.

please, i would appreciate any more advice

Ha, same problem as me (only it was student government). I chose student government because I love it and I think such a great leadership position is worth more than the few GPA points it has cost me. Other than that, I've taken the same classes as the top ranked students and gotten the same grades.

Then again, student government is one of my main ECs, and it seems like you may not feel the same way about newspaper.

bump
10 char

If you love newspaper, go for editor -- if you've got competitive classes and high grades and are ranked #3 (or whatever) in your class, colleges aren't going to say "oh man! they're not valedictorian! we can't take them!"

But if you don't really love newspaper, or if you would rather take whatever other class it is (in terms of intellectual enrichment), go ahead and take it instead of newspaper. Do what will make you happiest and most able to concentrate on doing things that you love.

But remember, if you're doing the newspaper just for "OH, it'll look good on my resume" only...
... We despise people like that. I'm on staff, and I can pinpoint the ones who do that; and boy, do we hate them.

It's a good way to earn hate points.
