My school didn't make the list, but I'm not surprised!

133 Lakeside High, Atlanta, GA. (Highest in GA!)

KING HIGH! 13 last year... 73 this year. That's b/c last year's class didn't care much about passing APs and IBs after they already got into the colleges. Next year it will go up. Hopefully.

This year, the magazine author opened the door to include MAGNET schools and CHARTER schools as long as their SAT average was 1300 or lower and ACT was 29 or lower.

My school was one of 21 schools quoted as "public elites" in the magazine,
excluded from the ranking because our SAT average was ABOVE 1300.

I really wish next year they;d include us in the ranking :D

woah, my old high school has generally been in the top 30 and now it's completely off the list (I even checked by state...nothing!)!

The bogus high school rankings by Newsweek means nothing.

The formula used is the total number of students who took AP exams divided by the number of graduating seniors.

I don't think that tells much about a high school.

I can't find mine, i'm not looking well enought I guess

i go to City Honors (number 4 by the way ;-) and i will be attending princeton in the fall so maybe there is some correlation but even though the ranking is a real nice thing it isnt accurate at all. for example all juniors are required to take AP US and all sophmores are required to take AP Lit and all sophomores used to be required to take AP Euro, normally reserved for seniors. is everyone at City Honors that smart? NO, the Buffalo Public Schools are just too poor to afford alternate courses for the "academically less gifted." maybe being poor does have advantages. i hate to be cynical but hey i guess its good they dont rank athletic facilities...

that list is bs...

they should include magnet schools...no doubt TJ would be number 1

woo hoo... go arcata high at #465

Are the best high schools the ones that pressure the most students into AP/IB classes?
Are the best high schools the ones with the most ambitious students?
If those are the only criteria, the rankings are useful; if not, which I tend to believe is the case, the rankings are fatally flawed.

Yeah, just to echo the opinion of everyone on here...

If the "top 100" high schools are really an indication of America's best, then we're in a lot of trouble (I would know; I go to a school that's been ranked in the top 10 the past two years). The AP/IB label says nothing of the quality of the classes or students.

how do you find your school?

So, why is it that Florida has such a bad reputation for education, and yet 3 of the top 10 are in FL? One of my english teachers went to school up north, and when her friends found out she was going to teach down here they told he they hoped she liked it because she would never be able to get a job up north again. I hate regional stereotyping.

Although this is certainly one way to rate high schools, this is definitely not the only or most accurate way to rate. My school only offers AP classes in math (stats and calc) and languages (spanish and french). [We're a small school, which means we have fewer class offerings, so I teach myself the AP curriculums =). ] Thus, some of the best schools who don't offer AP classes won't appear on the list, just because of a lack of AP availability. However, I do congratulate the schools that appeared on the list.

Fire Walker: Magnet schools are included.

My school is ranked 380...which is funny since in reality, it's one of the top public high schools in our state, but if you look at Newsweek, they place a few other high schools before ours. It's a bit annoying considering how small my school is and everything, we get outkicked on a lot of these sort of rankings because not everyone who graduates takes APs, thus our percentage falls dramatically to a bigger school with graduating seniors who all take APs. One of the "better" schools one there for my state has a 95% graduation rate...my school has a 99.9% graduation rate. Plus, people in my school also get into ivy leagues and such, so I don't think it correlates whatsoever. Dumb rankings.

Does that table include public magnet high schools? I can't find mine which has a much higher ACT average and AP scoring.

I see Lincoln Park there as 30 which was a school I was going to attend if I didn't get accepted into the magnets though which are better.

EDIT:

Upon further review and reaing about their criteria I can safely say that the list DOES not actually in any way shape or form represent top public high schools. The criteria on which they based their rankings is quite dumb.

the problem i have is where is huffman high school?

Apparently my school is too good for this list; I'm attending one of the "Public Elite" High Schools in the nation, the third best school in my state. :) Union County Magnet High School.

I guess my school is even better than I thought. :)
