Newton vs. Upper!

Hey i got accepted EA and i can’t decide whether I’d rather live in upper of newton for freshman year.

So anyone else accepted EA please post which one you will apply for and more importantly WHY!

Also any other students who lived there, talk about the pros/cons. I know the negative about Newton is the bus situation and the positive is a “close-knit group” kinda thing with all freshmen and that Upper is more convenient. Is there anything anyone can tell me that can help me make up my mind??

I am not really sure whether I will be attending for sure...I'm facing a really tough choice between Providence and BC but if I do attend BC next year I'm going to apply to Newton just because I think it would be alot of fun to be in that "close-knit" group and meet alot of other freshman. I don't think the bus situation is too bad, as it would only be for freshman year and after that you'd know the people in our class much better. To me its a more than fair trade off...the busses are supposed to be pretty convenient so I don't believe they'd be much of a problem. However that's just my opinion...

providence vs BC = not a hard decision even though I might be leaving BC... on the other hand, Newton>>Upper

Upper. Loved it there. Plus, it was convenient, especially on those days with horrible weather.

There's the stigma that kids who live on Newton are the only ones who feel connected to their class when that's simply not the case.

i think that if i wind up going (not sure yet) ill pick upper. i dont like the whole bus thing and even though newton is just freshman, there will be frosh dorms on upper and i want to be around everyone and not just freshman. im sure newton would be nice to but i feel that upper there will be more options

I would say for most people wherever they end up living they enjoy it. There are pro's and con's to each and it is hard to say which is better, but coming from someone who really wanted to live on Upper I really love and enjoy Newton. Upper is surely more convenient but at the same time there are many great aspects of Newton as well. It is smaller and you really do get to know people a lot better. I know everyone in my dorm pretty much and I know and am friends with everyone on my hall, whereas I have friends on upper who don't even know everyone on their own hall. There are no forced triples, and the rooms are a tad bit bigger but most people are fine with that regardless of where the live. Lastly, Stuart- the Dining hall is one of the best. The bus does suck at times, but you can't win them all. There are just as many positives and negatives about Upper as well. It is closer to campus, you are around more people but that sense of closeness really isn't the same. Lastly, and this is just from my observations thus far, there is a distinct difference between my friends from Newton and my friends from Upper. My friends from Newton seem to be more open and outgoing while my friends from upper although they are nice people they are more secluded and secular. Just from my point of view though. Either way, no campus is perfect, each has its positives and negatives, but college is about adjusting and making do with what you have. You really can't lose with either one. If there are any more questions let me know, I'll be happy to answer them.

What about the honors dorm (Medeiros Honors House)? Anyone have feedback about that?

I live on Upper and I love it. You are going to be happy wherever you live but here are some reasons why I think Upper is better. The Newton kids have to factor in thirty minutes each way when they go to Main Campus, when you oversleep (it will happen, I don't care who you are) you are out of luck. Second, more of a "college environment", ex. all the dorms enclose a "quad" where there are always kids throwing around a football, reading, etc. On the weekends, if you want to stay and party with freshmen, you do it on Upper. Not sure why, but it just works out that way. I cannot speak for the people on Newton, but I love Upper

alright thanks guys, you've been really helpful...if anyone else has anything to add that would be appreciated :)

30 minutes is a little exaggerated during class time...more like 20 at most

Does anyone know approx. what % of Upper campus is composed of freshmen? I know Newton is 100% freshmen...

this weekend i went to the ea admitted eagle day and did a dorm tour. i went to one dorm on upper and abosutely loved. before seeing it, i thoguth that upper was jsut all spread out but freshman have their own area that is JUST FRESHMAN so you can get that community feel. so now ive definetly decided that if i go to bc that im goign to live on upper. soemthign nice too is that theres also a separate area for soph dorms so you can get even closer with your class second year.

yeah i went to the admitted eagle day too and i really liked the tour of the upper dorms too...im def. leaning towards picking that campus

don't put all your hopes on upper, you could get stuck on newton...like me...

I picked Upper but I got Newton and I couldn't be happier. Yes, it sucks to have to wait for the bus sometimes, but I met so many people at the bus stop and on the bus in the first few weeks that it was worth it. Also, the buses are hilarious Friday and Saturday nights, especially if you get the last couple before they stop making their routes. Stuart has way better food than McElroy, something that my friends from Upper always comment on when they come to Newton. It doesn't really help you to feel more connected, but you do recognize a lot of people because you see them on the bus all the time. And there are a lot of parties on Newton, and most of them are pretty good. I've gone to Upper and Newton parties, and I like Newton's better. You also have more room to party in cause there are no forced triples and some of the quads are massive.

I am a current freshman here and both places are great to live at. I live on upper, but have many friends on newton. One thing about upper that some people dont realize is it is all freshman. They say upper has upperclassmen, but those students are on college road. Where you will be living is all freshman. One word of advice for no matter where you live is request a triple or quad (if you can handle multiple roommates). This rooms are a lot bigger and i think nicer. Anyways hope to see you next year

I visited BC last weekend and stayed with a friend on Newton. We partied on lower in an eight man and went to class too..i didnt think the buses were too bad. Also, newton is a lot more serene and removed from the busy college atmosphere. It gives you a sense of "coming home" after being out which i personally really like. Everyone on Newton was really nice and I made a ton of friends in the 4 days i was there. If i go next year i'll probably request newton. Also Stuart's food was excellent, i've eaten in other college cafeterias and they suck ass..Stuart was awesome

caddyshack233: don't put all your hopes on upper, you could get stuck on newton...like me...

i take it you dont like it? from the thread and what i heard when i visited everyone who lived on newton LOVED it. one girl would not stop talking about how awsome it was and to live there no matter what. its interesting to find someone who doesnt like it, why not?
