martinsmc, im sure youll be fine as well :)

whats your major and stats again? is ucla your first choice btw? i saw two 3.7 get into soc this year on this board, the average admitted applicant having a 3.72.

but martin, i totally feel you. Cs screw over your gpa. im doingmy best to get one removed off my transcript…i had a really rough first semester. but i think mostly everyone on this board as a ood chance :)

@logicwarrior - I knowww. I hate macro. I heard it was supposed to be easy, too. ): But micro was much, much, muchhh easier for me.

Are any of you guys relying on TAP for admission? @martinsmc - Kaz I know that if you’re in TAP then you can still apply for an alternative major and get in (not that you wouldn’t get in as a comm major, hahah). I was going to do that with art but decided to change my major instead.

But anyway my GPA is below the avg-admit-GPA. I’m in TAP but still very worried, even if it is, like, 98% acceptance rate from smc (rumor has it…?). :T

Dude…I am a women’s studies major. AND ITS awwwwesomeeee. The admit rate is like 64% with the average g.p.a. of 3.23. very interesting classes…and no pre-req at community college at UCLA or CAL. Women’s studies is the shizzzzle. I am gonna go to law school…boooyaaaa! I just wanna apply already!

Well my stats will probably go like this at time of app:

3.9-4.0 GPA (Currently 4.0)
Communication Studies Major

I’ll probably have a couple of EC’s/work experience to name, but the one I’d probably focus on the most is my internship with Irwin Winkler (Academy Award winning producer of all the Rocky movies, Raging Bull, Goodfellas; only producer ever to have 4 Best Picture nominations).

No TAP, because I don’t think I can see myself doing anything other than Communications at UCLA. Like I said, it’s a crapshot–whether I get in or not, I’m sure I’ll be happy wherever I end up :]

@erikuh - I thought macro was easier too but I had to find out the hard way. Ahh. I might get a B. Borderline grades really do suck. But anyway, I heard it depends on the person and the teacher. I never took HS econ so I don’t really know about that. I took Chan for both and he’s an awesome teacher but his tests are rideeekulusss.

I don’t normally read the SMC newspaper but there was an article on UCLA and how selective they are. The guy was whining because he got rejected to Communications with a 3.92.

Macro is easier than Micro for sure. I took Macro with Yankey and most of it was writing papers (some of his tests were take home, but the questions were tedious…12-15 pages per test) + daily in class quizzes.

although I don’t attend SMC , grades only account for one factor of the admissions process.

Maybe he had a 3.92 , and nothing significant in regards to internship or work experience. UCLA would definitely take someone with a 3.85 over him if that person had intern at NBC or some other local news station…

just a thought.

It is a catch22 when it comes to internships/work exp as a transfer student. (esp CCC students). Most places want someone from a 4-year college so it is hard to even get an interview unless you know someone. Luckily though , I managed to meet the right people and showed up at the right places at the right time.

I’ll be looking out for internships for fellow econ students since I already have one.

I definitely have other schools that I’m applying to, and I know it’s gonna be really tough to get in to UCLA. It’s crazy that for Comm Studies a 4.0, field-related internships and great essays still does not get you in. I really wonder what it takes to actually get in?

On a lighter note, I’d be really surprised if the rest of you guys who are applying didn’t get into either UCLA or CAL–at least from the stats that I have seen. Just wondering, anyone else here a Comm major?

well i’m a community college student and im debating either to major in business or communications…i have passion for both but i only can pick one, so which major is harder to get into UCLA with business or communication?

well i’m a community college student and im debating either to major in business or communications…i have passion for both but i only can pick one, so which major is harder to get into UCLA with business or communication?

Well Communications is more selective, the major itself isn’t as hard as Business. I’ve taken a few Comm classes at SMC and most have been easy A’s, whereas Macro/Micro Econ, Calculus, Business, etc. require an effort to obtain that A. I can see how comm majors get 4.0’s (during their lower division, not necessarily easy in Upper div.)… You could probably take all the Comm pre-reqs for UCLA + a little bit of IGETC and end up with a 4.0 , but as a business major ending up with a 3.8~ would be reasonable with some effort.

UCLA (and their reps) are advising counselors to tell some students to apply as Math/Econ instead of Econ. Therefore, Math/Econ is going to have a lot of applicants and become more impacted this year. I still expect Math/Econ to have over 55% admit rate though. I doubt it will stay above 70% like the last 2 years.
