"Next Generation" of College Confidential Here Already? (FALL 2010 Transfers)

I don’t necessarily need the boost but that’s the only time I can take another class and that’s the only option available (unless I drop the one I’m enrolled in right now and try crashing a course), and I want to take the maximum number of units I can. Oh, the dilemma. I hate college! (Damn, signing up for classes at UC is only going to be worse.)

Anyone have any good reading lists?
Preferably a mix of classic and contemporary.

I think my brain is turning to mush without summer classes and I kinda wanna get back into reading for leisure.

Thanks guys :D

Whoa! So many replies.
Hello! Another (hopeful) fall 2010 transfer…

Major: English

Colleges:
Cal
UCLA
Occidental
(don’t really know where else to apply)

Not guaranteed by ANYTHING because

 1. typically, my major is impacted as heck :frowning:
 2. I’m not a CCCer :frowning:
 3. second-year transfer :frowning: (but I’ll have about 70 units to transfer if you include AP credit… hmm don’t exactly know very well how that works for each college)

^ I live right next to Oxy.
Chin up!

Hi @nicolemae (: Good luck! If you’re not at a CCC, where you at?

@erikuh,
Fountainhead (Ayn Rand)
Beloved (Toni Morrison)
Novel Without a Name (Duong Thu Huong)
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress (Dai Sijie)
The Devil Wears Prada (Lauren Weisberger)

And I’m not gonna lie, I love Harry Potter. Heehee.

East of Eden by Steinbeck

Watchmen by Moore

or something by Frans de Waal since you’re an Anthropology major

^ East of Eden is one of my fave books. Good call :D

good taste, after reading East of Eden, i haven’t come upon a book that comes close in my opinion

I just read both Hollywood and Pulp by Charles Bukowski. I still can’t decide if he’s terrific or terrible, but I figure I should keep giving him a shot since he’s considered a quintessential L.A. writer.

I began Fight Club by Chuck Palahnuik two days ago. I’ve been putting off seeing the movie because I wanted to read the book for years. I figured now was the time to finally do it.

@erikuh: Thanks! I actually live about 20 minutes away from Oxy, so I guess I’m pretty near as well? :)

@edelynly: I’m at CSU Long Beach. Great school, just doesn’t have what I’m looking for.

and East of Eden is AMAZING!

^
I like living in Eagle Rock.
It’s really diverse.
I’m reading up on this place called Galco’s that has hundreds (thousands maybe?) of types of vintage and international sodas and drinks.
It’s 5 mins away but I never bothered to visit :[

& my friend just picked CSULB over UCSB.
Why? I don’t know considering he got financial aid from UCSB too @_@

hello !
I’d like anyones take on this: i’m applying to UCLA as a communications major / UCB as media studies from UCSD (ucsd gpa: 3.8 + stellar high school record + solid work experience in journalism field). I know the major is highly impacted and practically impossible to get in, but this major is totally fit for my ambitions and career goals. But, since I’m from ucsd I’m not going to be able to complete all the prereqs (but i’m trying. i’ll be hopefully done with 5/7 by spring 2010)…what do you guys think of my chances? i am also applying to Steinhardt @NYU for communication studies + USC annenberg)

feedback would be much appreciated. thanks

you should try to boost that gpa and finish all your courses for the major, by the way what’s wrong with ucsd’s program? if they have one

it will be difficult because the average gpa is really high

Yes I understand it is…but UCSD is quite a prestigious school and I hope they take that my 3.8 is probably different than a 3.9 or 4.0 at a community college. I love UCSD, but I came in as a science major, which is what UCSD is known for. The communications department there isn’t up to par with its sciences, and I love UCLA’s communications program.

Sadly, it will be VERY hard for you to get into Communications at UCLA with a 3.8…and on top of that you’re not even a CCC transfer. They really don’t care how much harder UCSD is than a CC, all that matters to them is the grade + where you’re transferring from (CCC, CC, 4 year, OOS etc).

I don’t think it will be “VERY hard,” just difficult. He has a competitive GPA and I think he could probably write a good Personal Statement as well.

*She

thanks for the feedback. my GPA will be a 3.82 if I get a 4.0 fall quarter at UCSD, and I believe my pre-reqs are 4.0.

what do you guys say about the other schools i’m applying to? UCB (media studies)/USC (annenberg)/ NYU (steinhardt)?

Actually, Cali Trumpet, it will be VERY hard. It’s hard to transfer from UC to UC to begin with - applying as a comm major requires a leap of faith.

All those schools are hard, in my opinion. I think USC and NYU do look at SAT scores and ECs though, but if yours are pretty good, I think transferring to those will be easier than transferring to UCLA. I don’t know about UCB though (I heard UCSD’s program is better than Berkeley’s though. Correct me if I’m wrong).

Is it even possible to transfer from UCR to Berkeley? I’ve got a 3.94, which is very good I know but am I just dreaming? Is this leap even achievable?

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to complete all their pre-requisities since some of the needed classes aren’t offered at UCR :frowning: I’m applying to computer science in the college of arts and sciences.

Edelynly where is the proof? There was a post a few months ago that showed transfer statistics comparing CCC-UC transfers and UC-UC transfers and the numbers were almost identical. Seems like if you are in the GPA range, you have of a chance as any. And btw, UCLA specifically says UC-UC and CCC-UC transfers are seen in the same light (not just preference towards CCC transfers).
