I am about to choose classes for next semester, but I am having trouble deciding between biology and physics. My school lets me place out of 2 semesters of intro physics b/c of ap credit and the necessary math prereqs, but it doesn't let me do the same for biology (i get AP credit but still have to take intro classes). I want to take physics because its a more advanced class, but I plan to transfer for a interdisciplinary major with bioengineering and econ. I haven't taken a bio class yet, but i have taken an advanced chem class.

Here's what my sched looks like now:

Psych 100
German 101
Calc III (Math 250)
Linear Algebra (Math 260)
Freshman English Seminar (English 100)

Winter Classes:
Organic Chem I (Chem 224)
Macroeconomics (Econ 201)

This is what I've registered for so far next semester:
Organic Chem II (Chem 224)
Diff Equations (Math 254)
Abstract Algebra (Math 311)
Creative Writing (English 300)
Psych 242
International Trade (300 econ level class)
German 102

So should I take Bio 100 or Physics 120 (Electricity, Magnetism, and atomic physics). I like bio as a subject better, but i don't really have a problem with the level of physics i'm taking (i'm stronger in math/physics). I doubt I can handle taking both (that would mean taking 28 credits as opposed to 24, which i think is my limit in term of finisihing the year with my my current GPA), so which should i choose? i want to major in a bio-related field, but i also want as advanced a schedule as possible to show to adcoms (i'm reaching for a soph transfer at places like cmu, jhu, columbia seas, cornell, etc). Rigor or necessity?

yeah, i’m a little scared about that because i’ll be having chem everyday for like 5 hours T.T. I asked my future orgo professor for a syllabus cuz i already have the textbook. i started doing the reading and doing problems out of the book so i know what to expect.

i’m wondering if taking bio is such a good idea, because bio 100 in my school is like 4 hours lecture, and 5 hours labs, way more than either orgo or physics. i don’t want to be overwhelmed by bio, but i feel like i need it for my major >.<

Melon, your new school will tell you how many of your units transfered, and this number will determine your class standing. It depends on your new school’s policy if you can take a fifth year or not. It may not be in your best interest to overload, if you want to transfer more credits than your new school will accept. Some schools will not accept anyone who will enter with more than two years worth of credits.

but if i have more than 60 credits (mostly AP creds atthis point) this year, can i just transfer only 60 credits worth, or would having more than 60 credits (even if the number is inflated by AP creds) make me ineleigible for transfer? i currently have a little over 30 credits due to AP exams, but i don’t think all of my ap credits will transfer. i’ll have maybe 45 credits due to college classes though.

no that wont affect the 60 credit limit…i was facing the same problem with 44 AP and IB credits over and above the 40 college credits this year…i called MIT and columbia they say that what i have done in college would only be counted as part of those 60 credits…but colleges might have specific requirements so u should call them to clear any confusion

so if i have about 45 credits done by summer of college course credits almost all of which are xferable, then would i be given 1st semster or second semester sophomore standing at schools like columbia seas, cornell CALS, jhu, and carnegie mellon? also would these schools look favorably on my courseload for my major (biology at my current school) because its more advanced than the avg freshman courseload (even though i’m technically not a freshman)? i had a bad sat II math2 and bio score, but retook them recently and got 800,790. i heard that cmu doesnt want sat retakes from college, so would good grades in calc, chem, and bio/physics offset my bad HS scores, since I already have sophomore standing according to credit?

it’s weird because i have to declare my major by spring, but i just started college…everything’s moving so fast >.<
