Since the admissions letter wasn’t waiting at home yesterday, time to think about next steps. Any advice about the prospects of getting in to American after a gap year doing community service, like City Year? Does that improve chances of admission? Or doing a strong first freshman year at another college to set up a transfer application? Really need some advice, thanks!

Hi! Well i think Gap year is a good idea if you are really planning of doing something worthwhile activities. i dont know whether they boost admissions chances or not. If you are an international student then transfer admisson is tough. Its my opinion not a fact so you can check from others also

What was your sat score and grade point average? If they are in the range for American, I think community service could help your chances.

There is no one right school for everyone. Did you apply to any schools other than American? If not, you may want to spend next week getting some last minute applications in. Some schools have later deadlines than others (Jan. 15 and Feb. 1). If you did not have the SAT scores and GPA to be admitted regular decision, I don’t think community service will get you in next year. If you can only see yourself at American, I think transferring from another school is the way to go.

In order to advise you, we would need to know something about your profile and stats and what you are interested in studying. Also, whether you applied for financial aid. CityYear might be worthwhile if you told American that you wanted to be a teacher.

I wanted to thank everyone for your advice. In case you didn’t see the post in the other thread, the package with good news finally arrived last week. So thrilled for next year!
