College Football Notebook: Army turns to history to find its next coach
Cal Poly boss returns to West Point, N.Y.
Saturday, December 27, 2008
From wire dispatches
Army filled its football coaching vacancy by heeding a core West Point value: History matters.

Rich Ellerson grew up around Black Knights football and is leaving his coaching job at Cal Poly to come to a place he knows well. His father and two brothers graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, where brother John led the 1962 team to a 6-4 record. And he has worked before with former Army coaches known for running successful schemes on both sides of the ball.

Ellerson, who turns 55 Thursday, replaces Stan Brock, who was fired Dec. 12 after two 3-9 seasons. This season ended with a 34-0 loss to Navy. Brock, a former New Orleans Saints offensive lineman, was Army's offensive line coach for three years before replacing Bobby Ross in early 2007.

Academy officials who announced the selection yesterday said Ellerson expressed interest in the position when it was open in the past. They were impressed by his familiarity with a program in need of a quick turnaround.

Cal Poly made it to the Division I-AA playoffs twice under Ellerson and was ranked as high as No. 3 this season. He was 56-34 in his eight years at Cal Poly.

Here's that Coach Ellerson can make the annual Army-Navy battle a bit more intriguing. :p (But not TOO much so ...) Good luck Army, may you win 'em all but one.

Go Navy!

Whistle Pig - do I detect a bit of "nervousness" with your post?

You forgot the most intriguing part -

As defensive coordinator at Hawai’i from 1987 to 1991, Ellerson was teamed with a young triple option guru named Paul Johnson, who served as the Warriors’ offensive coordinator at the time. Johnson would go on to experience highly successful head coaching terms at Georgia Southern, Navy and, most recently, Georgia Tech. Ken Nuimatalolo, currently head coach at Navy, lettered three times at quarterback (1987-89), and Ivin Jasper, presently the Mids’ offensive coordinator, lettered three times at quarterback and slot back (1991-93) for Hawai’i during that time. Ellerson became intimately familiar with the triple option ingenuity of Johnson during those years. He would successfully install the high-powered system at Southern Utah and Cal Poly in the years that followed.

Small world - eh?

Anyway, regardless of all the hoopla - not one game of 2009 has yet been played. We will just have to wait and see what happens.......

Yes, it is a small world indeed. I can't wait to see what happens. I would love to see Army/Navy be a fight to the end, with Navy winning, of course.

Go Navy!

His USMA genes and 3 option championing would seem to make him an improved fit from the previous coach(s). And what's a near certainty...he can't do much worse. The black knight base line is near the bottom.

Due time do tell. ;)
