Next year self studying

hey guys. I was thinking about the aps that i wanted to self study next year. so i think i have decided on the following:

-ap euro
-ap micro/macro
-ap chem

I have some questions for you guys:
-What prep books should I buy for these tests?
-How hard will this be for ap chem and would you recommend me to buy/do something in addition to getting the prep book?

thanks

lolz, put it off for at least a month or something… chillax

PR for all three is the general consensus on CC. Good luck.

^ ok thanks
anybody else?

Do NOT self study AP chem. It’s one of the hardest AP tests by far and the consensus hardest Science. Take the CLASS for chem. Self study Enviro or biology even if you need to self study a science. While BIO may be “difficult” it’s not as labor intensive as chem is and is more based on memorization of concepts.

I wouldn’t advise self’ing Euro either. If you want to self a humanity do Psych or a Gov test; don’t put yourself through hell.

What grade will you be in and what does your schedule look like?

PS- For book suggestions click the thread that’s stickied entitled “Consolidated Book Suggestions for AP”

^ hey thanks for the advice. I took the world history exam this year and so i think i have a good understanding of european history. like at least an overview of it.
as for chemistry, i forgot to mention that i will be selfstudying chemistry along with my honors chemistry course. So it isn’t really a self study.

Im going to be a junior and i will also be taking calc bc.

For euro use CliffNotes AP European History. It’s bigger than PR, but if you know that book cold, euro is an easy 5.

PR for Chem. They teach less AP material than you would think in Chem H so be ready. If you want to buy a textbook for Chem get the Brown 11th edition AP textbook, it tells you which sections you need to know for the AP.

I’m thinking about self studying AP chem, too. I’m taking chem HL next year and I’m assuming a LOT of topics overlap. Same with AP Environmental. :)

I’ve also heard that Modern European History, and REA are good for Euro.
What are your guys’ thoughts on this?

I did independent study for chemistry this year (w/out ever having taken the regular course) and I did fairly well. It’s not as difficult as some would claim; just very math-intensive!!! So because you’re in calc I think you will be fine  I used the 5 steps book and I found that helpful, but go with the general consensus

^ awesome thanks! i do love math :D

Does anyone know if you can take an AP test that your school doesn’t offer classes for?

I had Pre-AP Chem from the same teacher who teachers AP. From what I’ve been told from those in AP Chem @ our School, very little of what you do in Honors relates to AP. An entire year of our Pre-AP class was basically the first 5 chapters of a 1000 page APCHEM textbook. If you want to do well on the exam, skip the Honors Class and just enroll in AP Chem. You may be a little behind the people who had Honors Chem the year before, but if you work hard over the summer and invest time like I know you will, you will have an easier time of it in the end.

^ that isn’t an option for me because my school doesn’t offer ap chem. This may be true of your honors chem course but im not sure if its the same with ours. I’ll try to see if i can get my hands on the honors chem syllabus.

Wow, AP exams JUST ended. Save this thread for later.

^ I want to get ready for self studying as soon as I can so… No, this thread will not wait for later.
