Do you guys think Vandy's rise in the rankings will continue, stay the same or flounder?

Agreed. My professor encouraged me to invest in a Vanderbilt degree because its star is rising.

we should be going down.

why? all our numbers rose this year

yeah, ecnerwalc332. I figured its nowhere but up for Vandy by now.

Well, we can be improving, but other schools could be improving more. For example, Emory, a school tied with vandy this past year, had a surge in applications, projecting them to be <30% admission rate.

Their reputation is increasing and is becoming more national. Coke is still pumping more money to increase their endowment, which is already higher than vandy's. considering that all else stays the same, just the fact that they have a lower admission rate could break the tie in their favor. Of course, other schools could fall in the rankings too. Rankings are relative.

Acceptance rate is such a small part of the ranking. We have a higher peer assessment score than Emory (which is a major component) and as long as we maintain this, I don't think Emory will pass us out anytime soon. Another major advantage that Vanderbilt has over Emory is that we win cross-admit battles with them. When students are accepted to both schools, the majority chose Vandy. Emory does poorly when you look at Revealed Preference data and the school needs to "track interest" to improve their yield.

Also -- there is no doubt in my mind that we are improving at a faster rate than many of the nearby schools. Applications at Rice seem stagnant in comparison.

excellent point college2332. Vanderbilt is already passing up Rice in many aspects, I am surprised it didnt pass up Rice in the last rankings guide. Overall, it seems that ALL international rankings guides seem to rank Vandy higher than its two main rivals; Rice and Emory.

Emory:
PA: 4.0
Grad Rank: 25
Fac. Resource Rank: 12
Selectivity Rank: 15
Financial Resources Rank: 16
Alumni Giving Rank: 15

Vanderbilt:
PA: 4.1
Grad Rank: 30
Fac. Resource Rank: 10
Selectivity Rank: 25
Financial Resources Rank: 15
Alumni Giving Rank:30

... Based on this data from the 2007 rankings it seems that the only possible way for Emory not to surpass Vanderbilt is if Vanderbilt retains its higher PA score. Due in part to the increased selectivity, new undergrad b-school rankings, huge increase in international rep (note THES World Rankings), new high profile professors (Rushdie and Dalai Lama) I'd be surprised if Vanderbilt moved up and Emory did not.

Dali Lama is a visiting professor, and Vandy ranks higher than both Rice and Emory in ALL international rankings guides. The only thing Emory has above Vandy is its B-School. And even then Vandy's small B-school is still keeping up with the major ones considering it was ranked by Wall Street Journal as having the one of the best small b-schools in the nation. Vanderbilt will hopefully surpass Emory and Rice in the next rankings guide.

First, most international rankings are utterly useless. Second, even though Vanderbilt ranks higher, Emory over the last year has increased its international rank by a greater margin.

THES World Ranking
2005: Vandy (114), Emory (141)
2006: Vandy (53), Emory (56)
NET: Vandy (+61), Emory (+85)

Also, visiting professor or not, it still has the potential to increase national prestige, i.e. the PA score.

So now the international rankings are useless when I present them in favor of Vandy, all the while you used them to paint a favorable pic of Emory in your last post?

I applaud Emory for its spike in the ranks, but that doesnt mean that tis suddenly going to zoom right past up Vandy, unless it can outdue Vandy's grad programs in medicine, law and liberal arts.
Point is I see Vandy rising in both the international and the national ranks this coming year. Over Emory and Rice.

.1 difference in the PA is not a lot. Also, I don't think grad school rankings have any effect on the actual undergraduate college. Moving above rice might be feasible, but probably not emory.

what? Rice is already way above Emory on the u.grad level.

I saw this on another website....."this year's results, to be published in the U.S. News issue due out the week of Aug. 25, 2007"...is 1.(tie) Harvard and Princeton, 3. Yale, 4. MIT, 5.(tie)CalTech, Duke, Stanford, UPenn, 9.(tie) Dartmouth and WashU, 11.(tie) Columbia and Northwestern, 13. U of Chicago,
14.(tie) Cornell and JHU, 16. Rice, 17. Brown, 18. Emory, 19(tie) Vanderbilt and Notre Dame

what website? link please.

My previous message may be wrong....tried to delete it but it was to late...the website wasn't reliable..apparently just a "blog"......guess we'll find out soon enough. I thought something may have been wrong with it when I saw Duke go up in ranking after last year-- I think it would be more likely to have fallen slightly. My apologies.

I knew that had to be wrong. But are there actually any REAL leaks of the next US News Rankings?

those sound like they may have been predictions, and hopefully only predictions. i'll die if washu actually breaks into the top 10
