no, i meant USnews rankings! lol

will ucla ever be the #1 public school?

UCLA is the #1 public university according to Washington Monthly, and is #4 according to US News.

The difference is due to different ratings criteria. US News rates colleges based upon the SAT scores of the incoming high school students, whereas Washington Monthly rates based upon the achievements of the actual college students.

Plus, US News gives lots of bonus points for private fundraising and alumni donations, which therefore favors private schools over public schools that aren't so dependent on private fundraising.

In the recent College edition of Jeopardy, it was a UCLA student who won it all, beating out Harvard, Stanford, Princeton and the like.

This has been a good year for UCLA in general. Whether this is reflected in the US News Rankings is anyone's guess, because they change their criteria every year. The Fields Medal, the 100th NCAA championship and the record-low 23% admit rate might be for naught.

has the endowment increased?

if ucla just beats berkeley on the list, i will be more than happy. seriously, this should shut those people treat ucla like berkeley's retarded twin. just cause ucla is better at sports doesn't mean it is worse at academics.

I don't think UC is going to LET LA beat Berkeley. I read somewhere and the guy at admit day mentioned how Berkeley wouldn't let LA have an engineering school until after it promised it wouldn't be a rival to Berkeley's. I agree about the retarded twin thing. People make it sound like you're second tier and it's nearly impossible to describe it to people from other countries without mentioning Berkeley at least once =_____=.

Well gee, American Idol's worst contestant, William Hung, attended Berkeley's school of engineering. I guess that's pretty impressive. ;-)

well I chose UCLA over Berkeley, as did my brother before me, and my dad before him. you get the picture. to me, berkeley is a dreary school with a pretentious attitude. nothing about it really impressed me, oh WOW some magazine full of people who never went there say it has the best such and such program. Who cares? I chose UCLA based on my preferences, it was obviously the place to be in my mind.

Who cares? Well, I do, and so do most of the people on cc deciding between UCLA and Berkeley. I also chose UCLA over Berkeley, but just because a school fits you as a person better does not mean it should not be more highly ranked.

Rankings matter, and I do not think that UCLA is any worse than Berkeley. I want the rankings to reflect that. Rankings are all that the average guy can go by.

The average person needs to learn that a ranking difference of + or - 5 spots is rather trivial. UCLA is within 5 spots of UCB I believe.

UCLA over Berkeley....because LA is better....

oxypunk151: The average person needs to learn that a ranking difference of + or - 5 spots is rather trivial. UCLA is within 5 spots of UCB I believe.

Perhaps, but the fact is that this ranking system is a huge contributor to the perception of UCLA as Berkeley's lesser cousin and as a less academically capable institution. The ranking is the only source that most can go by, and I would like see UCLA perceived more highly than Berkeley by the rest of the population.

mrxalleycat: Same perception. UCLA is better not because LA is better than Berkeley but rather because UCLA is better than UC Berkeley.

they're both GREAT schools.

They need to change a lot of things about the US News rankings. When 25% of their criteria is supposedly how much money they have in their endowments, you get an idea why Harvard and Yale, with $25bill and $18bill respectively, get to keep their top spots.

It also seems to be why the public schools, with Berkeley leading, don't seem to ever be beyond the 20th ranking. IMO the top tier UCs and U Mich. are more than better than some of the private schools in the 10~20 region. I understand that schools like Notre Dame, Emory, Rice, and Vanderbilt are great, but I guess regional perceptions make it hard for me to think of them as greater than Berkeley.

While I don't necessarily think that LA is worse than Berkeley, I do believe that the distance between them is more or less justified. It's their distance from the top ten that tends to annoy me and make me realize just how biased US News is towards public schools.

UCLA!!!

well, i didnt turn down NYU AND WashU for nothing.

cuz all my peeps went to LA!!!

i am, and always will be, a bruin at heart!!!

You just contradicted yourself.

i think ucla is better than uva, and tied with u mich.

i really dont care for michigan, I think most people will tell you Virginia is the one making a lot of progress. Virginia and UNC were pretty cool when I checked them out, I recall Michigan being slightly less impressive to me, personally, during my trips.
