I suspect that is why The Cradle Will Rock is also showing up on a few seasons.

@KatMT – Absolutely agree! Guess we live in an era when MT is important, given that shows like Cradle Will Rock and Cabaret feel timely.

NU Musical Theatre Festival (this summer):
How Can You run with a Shell on Your Back?
Bubble Boy the Musical
The Giver

There is a dance show in January and another show called Culteral Conversations in February.

All of the these are SOT productions. There are a number of student run (not affiliated with SOT) organizations/clubs that also do shows.

It sounds like The Giver is getting a few staged readings this summer. I wonder if the authors will be re-working the new musical at each of them. Does anyone know when Penn State’s production is, and whether the authors will be re-writing during/after it?

Penn State’s Giver is July 14 - 16 at 6pm. It’s billed as a “developmental reading” so I’m assuming there’s some “development” going on as part of the festival.

@stagedoor22 – Thanks for the added info! It looks like both the Penn State and the CA productions are before the local production, and it sounds like script changes are still arriving here. It’s always so interesting to watch new shows in development!

The Giver has been ‘in development’ for about six years now. I know that CAP21 did a few readings as well as a concert performance of it probably 3 or 4 years ago.

@alwaysamom – The more I’ve watched new shows being created, the more I think that a 5-10 year timeframe isn’t uncommon for the development of new musicals these days. I think Memphis was in process for almost 6 years before hitting Broadway and I think Spring Awakening was in workshops for 6-7 years and Next To Normal (originally Feeling Electric) took ~7 years to get to Broadway.

Of course most shows that spend time in workshops don’t go far beyond that phase, but it seems like it is often a long process. It’s so interesting to watch various shows work through development!

Due to the success of the Maymester reading, the creative team behind “Bigfoot and Other Lost Souls” has agreed to allow Coastal Carolina University to produce the show. In association with Atlantic Stage (a small equity theatre associated with CCU) and Perserverance Theatre in Alaska, CCU will workshop and be a part of the premier. Tony award winning composer Mark Hollman (Urinetown), and writer Adrien Royce will be in residence at CCU for most of the show rehearsal and it will be directed by John Woodson. We are so happy to be the first to produce this exciting new work, which hopes to go to New York at some point, off Broadway or on. We all realize what a great opportunity this is, for the students to get to work with such wonderful talents.
