Nextel/Sprint Cellular Service in C-ville

How is the cellular service reception etc.for Nextel/Sprint in C-ville. Necessary to switch to another carrier for better results?

From what i've heard, Cingular and Verizon are by far the best. I have Cingular and whenever I visit I have perfect reception, and my friend has Verizon and he says the same thing. The only bummer: he has a basement room and thus his phone only works when he puts it on his window sill and he, and every other basement resident, are often seen running outside to take the call. It definently sucked this past weekend when it was cold as heck there.

What about T-Mobile?

I use Alltel. I live about 40 miles south of the University. I never lose service. Most of the big companies are spotty once you leave the city. C'ville is still considered a minor market by most companies.
But by looking at all the kids talking on their cell phones while walking through the grounds I would suspect that most have good service.
Sprint/Nextel are one of the larger companies in town. We actually used them here at the Bookstore

i have verizon and when i was there a couple of weeks ago, i had good cell phone service, but not texting!

i could only text verizon customers becuase i was on an "extended network"

We don't have a Verizon in Charlottesville so I don't know about the reception. T-Mobile is what I'm hoping to switch out of... there are very few places/buildings I could get any bars... I heard Sprint, US Cellular are good.

Verizon technically isn't available in C'ville, but I have Verizon and have had absolutely no problems.

Cavalier:Is it true you have limited texting capabilites with Verizon?

i hope cingular works okay. i have a 2 year freakin contract

my friends on verizon have never had any trouble texting me even though i'm on alltel.

I never lose service around cville and am extremely pleased with Alltel

marlin, the only thing that I haven't been able to do is send pictures, but I rarely do that. Texting has worked out just fine.

I don't send pics either. Thanks for the info

Cingular (now back to AT&T... starting to drive me crazy all the switching) is what I've had down there for two years now. In dorms/appartments I really have had some difficulty getting/receiving calls. Outside no matter where I am I can make a call.

Verizon seems to have similar if not better reception, however there is always the complaint of being in extended network.

i'm unfamiliar with how the other providers hold up.

Excellent coverage outside, good inside (depends on location - had perfect service in my 1st year dorm, get about half coverage in academic buildings).

T-Mobile?! T_T HORRIBLE coverage for me, no reception at all inside classroom buildings, random drifting reception when I walking outside, drops my calls sometimes. Ugh, I'm switching provider when my contract's up. Or it could be just me.
