That seems like such a fast turnaround time for the number of applications they receive, though I guess it’s not as many when you look at it by discipline. I know that finalists, honorable mentions, etc. are posted, but does anyone know if they display the full stats with how many apply in each discipline?

I have never seen an exact number that apply per discipline but have just seen a number in the 7,000 - 9,000 range. I think the fast turn around is due to the fact that they judge the submissions in a two step process. Their is an initial judging that I have to believe is fairly quick that whittles the numbers down to the top 10 - 15%. Then, a different set of judges go through these and pick the finalists that go to Miami or that fall into the honorable mention categories. They just posted a video interview with one of the judges from last year on line about the process as the final judging supposedly started yesterday and go on for three days.

I applied for spoken theatre, and know that my submission arrived on October 25th (because of FedEx tracking barcode) but I am worried because I haven’t gotten my confirmation email saying that they have scanned in my submission . . . . I called last week and they said that they were almost finishing up scanning in the submissions. I’m getting nervous that it was lost! How can they be announcing finalists in two weeks if they haven’t even scanned mine in yet? Anyone have a similar experience?

Don’t worry. When I submitted a few weeks ago (for photo) I did not get a confirmation e-mail. I was so worried but I called and they said that they had received it and that I had been sent an e-mail. So there might be some problem with their e-mail confirmation system but if they say that they have it then they do :)

Ohhh and P.S I am getting soooo nervous! I read some threads from past years and they said that they notify people who are finalist around Nov 20th…eeeekajkjbwehqoriljnvfqeurygb!!!
lol…is that all I have to say
oooh & good luck!

yes, I got in touch with them and they confirmed it! I know, I am nervous too! Good luck!

Four more days… I’m torn between pulling my hair out about it and not wanting to think about it. :(

yes! my thoughts exactly…
But according to past years finalist find out…tomorrow
AHHHH! oooh boy this is such a waiting game…!!!

Looks like last year they called on the 22nd and 23th so that would be Sunday ,Monday this time?

Has anyone heard yet?

Not yet! So anxious!

Awww… I was hoping I could get through Thanksgiving without knowing. Now that it’s so close, I’m so nervous! I wish I hadn’t even looked it up.

Last year, I submitted Nonfiction writing and I got merit for photo but nothing for writing. Then in Spring, I won a Scholastic national gold portfolio for the same essays I sent to YoungArts. So there is hope, everyone! Even if you don’t get YoungArts, there are other great contest with scholarship money and recognition.

And if you’re still 16 or 17, you can apply again next year.

Eeek! It’s the 21st.

I’m so terrible at waiting. As soon as anyone hears anything… for the sake of my sanity… DO tell us. :]

girlcandisco, what category did you apply for?

I just got a call. I’m a finalist! I sent in a novel excerpt. They said I’d be getting an email and a packet soon.
