NFAA YoungARTS Program - 2011

ahhh, I applied for visual arts. I really hope I make it in!
I’ve haven’t been able to put my phone down all weekend.

me too…
I was wondering if anyone from visual arts had heard yet.
I submitted for photo. I am on like pins & needles here ugggg…
But I think I am done for the night…lol…
I am just going to have to chill, cross my fingers, and wade it out.
Hopefully they’ll be making more calls tomorrow

Best of LUCK everyone :D

Has anyone heard that applied in dance?

congrats girlcanDISCO!!! I’m guessing that probably means all the writing calls have been made? :(

Does anyone know if they have started to call theater spoken finalists yet?

Does anyone no if they make all their calls in one day ?

Does anyone no if all of the calls are made in one day?

I’m pretty sure that they make all of their calls in one day, provided that they get a hold of everyone. I’m not positive, so I’d wait another day, just to be sure.

Congrats everybody!

Not one musician here got the call? : ( That’s depressing.

DD got called for Musical Theatre yesterday, and as it turns out she knows at least two of the other Finalists. She is SO excited! Best of luck to all who are still waiting to hear!!

It sounds like there are many thousands of talented applicants and still several layers of awards to be made, not to mention all the other great scholarship opportunities, so keep the faith!!

Thanks to everyone for the congrats. And good luck to all who might still be waiting!

Does anyone know how the Presidential Nominees/Scholars are decided?

Because you are selected through NFAA, you have already made it through one of the additional rounds of elimination for Presidential Scholar of the Arts, Congrats. Once you have gone to Miami, there will be further recommendations from the staff about who should be selected - these are semifinalists. Then, you will get more paperwork to fill out for PSA. There are several levels of scholarships at this point also. The Gold and Silver levels get to go to DC. I will tell you that PSAs are typically very well-rounded in their applications ie, community service, leadership as well as talent.

Thanks for the info! It sounds SO exciting. I’m a dork and have already started packing…

Hi from a newbie. :-)

I suspect, at least where visual is concerned, that not everone has been called. My son goes to a magnet high school for the arts in the mid-atlantic region. Every year, multiple people from his school go to Miami. So far, no one from his school has been called.

Through doing Marie Walsh Sharpe last summer, he knows of 6-8 people who have been called. All of them have been from 2 art high schools in the Miami area.

So, IMO, it isn’t over yet. :)

I agree with POTO Mom, with a few amendments. Gold and Silver Award winners (who are not necessarily the same as the PSA nominees) get to spend an additional week in New York City working on a collaborative show in an Off-Broadway theater. Only the actual Presidential Scholars go to DC.

And in my experience, it was actually not necessarily the most well-rounded nominees who actually became Presidential Scholars. In fact, there were two Presidential Scholars in the Arts nominees who were also Presidential Scholar nominees for academics, and NEITHER of them became PSAs. An entirely different, non-NFAA committee chooses the PSAs, and to be completely honest, I was really surprised by the group that they chose in my year–more so by the kids who were NOT chosen than by anyone who was picked. So I wouldn’t worry too much about the PSAs right now. The most important thing is youngARTS, and you should focus on getting excited for that! :)

oops. you are so right, mflevity, about the NYC (gold/silver) vs DC (PSA) thing. I was typing faster than my head was thinking. And actually, I would love to get the inside scoop on the criteria for choosing the PSA. Basically my D read what was on the website and compared it to who was chosen and made some assumptions about the community service and leadership aspects. Person who got the nod was very strong in both of those areas as well as extremely talented.

I just called Young Arts and they said they had not finished making all the calls yet, and they did make them by category. They started calling yesterday and they’re continuing today. I don’t know about tomorrow.

Has anyone from the artist category gotten a call yet, and if so, where from? I heard it might have to do with region and I’m from the midwest.

What would NFAA do if the called you and no one picked up? Are we notified by email also?

I’m not sure… they’d probably leave a message. If they can’t do that, they are sending a packet of information out to the finalists, so either way you’ll know sooner or later…
Um, if we’re notified by e-mail it was never mentioned.
