NFAA YoungARTS Program - 2011

@robbinsnest5… You, DD has 5 more college aps she hopes to complete, one of which she’d planned for this weekend, but now she’s doing YoungArts paperwork instead! Ah well, at least they’re not bored!

Doers you son know any other MTs going to Miami? DD knows at least two other kids she met this summer in Michigan, so she’s excited about that!

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

Today is 11/27 anyone receive a phone call that was a classical music applicant yet?

From their Facebook page: “everyone will be notified by mid-December”

^That’s referring to honorable mention and merit awards, not the Finalists.

I’m really sorry that they’re being so weird about it this year. You might as well call or email and find out for sure what’s going on with the Finalist notifications.

I hate seeing the angst about NFAA every year. They choose a very small number of students, and they are not reflective at ALL of where your sons and daughters (or selves) will be selected for colleges. The factors seem very subjective, so don’t despair if a phone call doesn’t come your way. Congrats to those who made the cut, but DON’T WORRY to those that weren’t. I know a jazz musician who got the lowest possible recognition from NFAA one year, followed by an Instrumentalist of the Year in Downbeat Magazine the same year, and got into every college applied to!

… and to reinforce the previous post, DD is a YoungArts finalist, but so far she’s been unable to get that fact added to her ED file for her first choice college, so it’s not likely to be of any help to her in being admitted to at least that particular school. And I’m pretty sure I recently read of a YoungArts finalist who was not admitted to any of her preferred schools.

IMHO, the arts are so subjective and there are SO many talented artists among us that no single experience can make or break any of these kids.

Hope some more CC folks get the call soon but if not, spend the extra time honing college auditions and go on to do great things!

This is really dragging out this year. A visual arts (painting) student from my son’s magnet school was notified last night that she was a finalist. So, it looks like they are still making calls.

Extremely jittery writing applicant in California here. Has anyone been notified from my area / discipline? ):

The list of 2011 finalists is now on the youngarts website. Congratulations to all those who were selected to go to Miami.

My D received a Merit award. How many of these are given out? Also congrats to all of you who became finalists!

Did she get notification of the merit award by email or regular mail?

She received a letter in the mail today. Is this a real honor, or do all the kids get this letter who were not picked for Miami?

Thanks. Based upon the lists I have seen about 150 are selected to go to Miami, about 150 are selected as honorable mention and then about 200 are selected as merit. So in total about 500 out of the 7,000 - 10,000 who apply get some sort of recognition.

It is a real honor. Only a few are chosen for the Merit and Honorable Mention awards. In many categories that will be only 2 or 3. Their old website used to list the Honorable Mention and Merit winners as well as the finalists - I don’t see it on their new website. But here is the list of last year’s winners http://www.nfaaartsawards.org/pdf/2010%20Finalists%20Hon%20Mentions%20Merits%20for%20Website.pdf</a>
which should give you an idea of what an honor it is for your daughter.

Thank you so much! She will be so pleased!

as far as I know Merits and Honorable Mentions are getting letters.
I was notified today thats I am a Merit and I am soooo happy :)…
But to everyone who applied you all are truly amazing and deserve the best.
We’re still young and the world is ours…keep doing what your passionate about and the rest will follow suit.

Also…I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this board (that I checked neurotically everyday for about a month)…lol…it helped me alot in this process!

& congrats to those who are going to Miami!

Best of Luck…

x.o

My son got his letter of his HM award this past Monday (in the “Voice” category…don’t know if I’m supposed to go further than that given forum rules). He also learned last month he made the ACDA National Men’s Honor Choir, so he’s been doubly blessed this fall. (And he’s thinking of majoring in music education/music performance in that order, so those two experiences could help him in both.)

Congrats to all NFAA 2011 winners!

CONGRATULATIONS to all of these talented artists! I can’t wait to watch what you all accomplish in the coming years, but in the mean time enjoy this tremendous achievement!

I hear they may be live streaming some of the evening performances this year from the YoungArts website.

I hope everyone who is going to Miami next week has a fantastic experience!!
