NHS/BETA Help!!

I'm a senior yet I have a problem. I was chosen to be in NHS and BETA at the end of my sophomore year. Throughout my junior year, I was only able to attend NHS and BETA 3 times. Home life was pretty bad and I wasn't able to keep up with after school and before school meetings, and at that point, I felt like I didn't even care anymore.

Now, my dad is finally out of the hospital, and my mom got a job, and everything is looking like it'll get better. However, I'm afraid that NHS and BETA and the other clubs I was a part of won't take me back. I'm scheduled to talk to the sponsors either on Tues. or Weds., but I don't know how to go about and ask them to take me back. I'm afraid they won't allow me to continue to be part of the club anymore.

I really want to be back in the clubs, and I know I far exceeded the maximum amount of days of not going to the clubs but now that everything in my life is starting to get brighter, and I want to start all over and do the things I wasn't able to do when I was a junior, and this time with a smile on my face.

So once again, is it possible for them to have me back?
And how should I go about asking to be back in the club?
Thanks.

I'm sure that if you explain your situation to the sponsors, they will understand.

The sponsor has decision wheter or not you are allowed back in. I'm pretty sure they will take you back in, even without your situation. I guess you would be considered like a new member.

How competitive is NHS and BETA at your school?

I'm not sure. All I know is that if you have a 3.75+ GPA for NHS and I think a 3.55 GPA for BETA, you're in. I have a 4.0 GPA and I'm in the top 5% in my class, so gradewise, I have nothing to worry about (even though my grades slipped from a 4.1 to a 4.0 because of home issues and I wasn't able to focus on my school work) But you can only join by invitation at the end of your sophomore year.

I'm just afraid that they won't let me in because I've missed so many meetings last year, and that even if I should go back as a "new member", my senior status won't allow me too. I just want to go back, despite the fact that I've only attended about 3 meetings last year. It's just, argh. So much has been going on and now that I am able to think with a clear head, I really want to go back.

I have the required volunteer hours.
I have my transcript ready to show them.
All I need is the "yes". Will the rules behind NHS and BETA allow me to go back?

Bump (10 character)

Anyone? (10 character)

Im almost certain that the sponsor will have the ruling over your case.
You have a good excuse, and you have the numbers of hours that were required by the clubs.
Just talk to your sponsor.

I talked to the NHS sponsor and he told me to see him tomorrow afterschool.
However, when I talked to the Beta sponsor, she put the subject aside and simply said that since I didn't do what was stated in the constition, I am no longer a member. She emailed me:

This is the email I use for Beta issues.
Yearly Beta Club criteria/expectations are:
1) Attend all meetings (a member may have 2 unexcused or 3 excused absences from a year's 10 meetings)
2) Participate in 1 Adopt A Mile Saturday
3) Pay annual dues ($20)
Those who do not fulfill these are no longer members.

So I decided to take it upon myself to read this constitution (<a href="http://www.betaclub.org/whoweare/constitution.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.betaclub.org/whoweare/constitution.html</a>) of the club's and this caught my eye:

A member may be reinstated, with no additional membership fee, when the administrator determines that the student is once again worthy of membership.

What determines a student worthy? And who is the administrator? I emailed that part of the consti. to her and hopefully she won't overlook it this time.

It seems like all they care about are the rules, and not the circumstances as to why a student can't follow those rules at a certain time period. :/

Let me put it this way, if the NHS/BETA sponsors DON'T allow you back in after what you had to go through, as well as your clubs, you don't need them. They are cold hearted people if they don't accept you back and deserve to rot.

Tell the BETA sponsor this, "So if people almost die in your immediate family, the ones that affect your life on a day-to-day basis, you don't care? This is what you're telling me."

My friend is in the same position and had the balls to say that. I don't think you should. Just explain to them your situation. If they don't like it, just say the quote above and walk out. I know how you feel man :O I really do.

Thanks, and after getting these 2 emails from the Beta Club sponsor, I don't even think I want to be in the club anymore.

Email #1:

Good Evening,

No, I do not mind "explaining that one". You are referencing the national website. We have a SCHS chapter constitution which does not provide for reinstatement.

Again, a 'worthy' member is one who fulfills club expectations. I find it difficult that this is such a challenging concept. The 'administrator' is/are the club sponsor(s).

BTW-Ms. Rogers is in agreement with me.

Sincerely,

Email #2:

Good Evening # 2,

'Rejoining' and 'new member' are mutually exclusive terms.

You have been garnering the 'reassurances' of someone who is quite obviously unaware of SCHS Beta policy.

Beta does make provisions for excused absences. One is allowed 3 per year; however, a member must provide an excuse to a sponsor in a timely manner after each missed meeting. Your desire to attend meetings should have been communicated last year when you were enduring such overwhelming circumstance(s).

No one has suggested that you did not want to attend the meetings. It is unfortunate that your desire was unrequited. Did those desires also include the paying of dues and participating in Adopt A Mile?

This would be a good time for you to focus on things more important than Beta membership.

Oh, the phrase " I should talk to my sponsor and see if they would let me in" contains several errors. The 1st is a pronoun/antecedent error: 'sponsor' is singular, 'they' is plural. The 2nd is 'talk ...and see'. This should be 'talk...to see'. Lastly, it is bad form to end a sentence or phrase in a preposition. Prepositions need objects.

You have a good night and a wonderful year.

Sincerely,

I can't believe she corrected my grammer when I was telling her about my family problems. :/
Gawd, I hate the teachers in my school.

bump (10char)

Wow.

I agree with Munix.

Not joining BETA or NHS will not hurt your chances at any school.
