NHS Inequality...

My GPA exceeds the NHS requirements. I have the service, the clubs and the leadership. But I can't get in. Why? Because at my school, AP courses which last the whole year are not factored into your GPA due to the fact they are not yet completed. As of now, I am receiving no credit for the all-year AP I'm in despite the fact that I have a weighted 5.5 in that class. That lack of credit is enough to tip the balance so that I no longer qualify for NHS. Essentially, had I opted to take a "normal" course (which lasts one semester) instead of that AP, I could have made NHS. Nowhere in our school's course manual did it state that courses which you are in the process of completing cannot count towards your NHS GPA calculation. This puts students enrolled in full-year AP's at a significant disadvantage. Had I a choice, I would have had all my AP's first semester, but this one, I had to take in an alternating all-year format.
Does your school have this policy regarding NHS GPA's? Should I speak to my principal about changing this? So many students at our school could be receiving scholarship money for NHS participation but cannot because of their decision to enroll in AP courses.

Talk to your gc, it is rather absurd policy.

Unfortunately my gc was the one who told me no…

Wow. I’ve heard of some ludicrous school policies, but punishing students for taking AP courses?

That’s ridiculous. I would make a complaint higher up on the chain.

Lolwut. Start an AP riot.

eh I didn’t get into NHS either even though I’m in the top 20 at our school for sure (school doesnt rank), had tons of service hours and good rec letters. My service wasnt “diverse enough” lol. NHS, at our school, is where they reward the not uber smart kids who volunteer while facing kids in the top 25 with the mentality “they are good enough already”. NHS is a joke at our school.

Jeez, you have no idea how much of a joke NHS really is. Seriously, don’t fret over something like this.

I don’t think not getting into NHS is a big deal, but if you want to, then I suggest filing a complaint or having your parents speak to the teacher in charge of NHS at your school.

At my old school, the NJHS was unfair.

Out of 30 students in my grade (small school), only like 4 got in. It wasn’t based on grades or community service or teacher recs, only what you did for the school. So even though I was an a student, over 50 community service hours, over 8 teachers gave me high recs (10 class periods a day, jewish studies + other jewish classes), and i was a starter on the vball team, bball team, and in show choir… I didn’t get in because I was there for 1.5 years (a private pre-k to 8 school).

I moved schools, hopefully this one will be better.

NHS doesn’t really matter because it varies so much by school.

That’s funny…if you have a 3.5+ GPA at my school and $10 out of your pocket per semester…you’re golden.

HAHA FAIL! There must be like at least 75 out of 350 kids in my grade in NHS. That is a REALLY dumb policy.

Yes, you should complain. You’ll probably get your way, since that policy is patently absurd.

The way my school does it is they look at your last semester’s grades, and if you have a 35, you’re in. My school gives grades by semester, though.

Don’t feel bad even if for some strange reason they deny your request. NHS is a joke, anyway. All we do is sell candy.

I wasn’t in accepted into NHS til my junior year. Then i became treasurer lol. I wouldn’t really worry about it if you could get into it by senior year. Everything turned out right for me :)

^ lol we can’t be accepted UNTIL Junior year.

NHS is an odd thing sometimes. Somehow, our Valedictorian this year didn’t get in… and as a junior he didn’t even qualify. I don’t know how that happens.

NHS is perhaps the most stereotypically useless club on applications; don’t worry, it’s rather tough to show any passion through NHS that you can’t show in other manners.

I didn’t get in. NHS is stupid at our school lol, 1/3rd of the students in it are going to CC. They invited me to apply a few weeks ago… Letter went straight to the recycling bin.

My sister who was NJHS President, with a 4.5+ GPA (requirement is 3.5 weighted) and loads of ECs/service didn’t get in. Lol’d IRL, we both think it’s the stupidest club at school now.

As a member of NHS, it’s a little useless. Your school’s policy is ridiculous, but I don’t think it would be worth your time to fight it.

As others have been saying, NHS is a joke…at my school, the requirements make it so people who have never taken an honors or AP in their life can get in easily!

NHS at my school is an absolute joke as well. We literally don’t do anything a majority of the year.
