I was wondering if any of you are in the National Honor Society. I'm being considered for membership at my school, and I'm wondering what other students had put in their student information form to get in. My school has five main sections on the form, besides scholarship. They are: Cocurricular Activities; Leadership Positions; Service Activities; Other Communitiy Activities; and Work Experience, Recognition, Awards.

why does my school not have nhs..-_-;; it will be so cool to have that..!!

Your school doesn't have it? :(
My school just established the club a few years back...

Leadership Positions and Service Activities sound great to me..

i just so wish that our school had that..=_+

It's really pretty useless unless you actually have an NHS chapter where people do stuff.

I refused to apply, because here the process is fairly obviously biased towards the students that certain teachers like the most. Besides, they don't do anything here except collect your dues every so often.

oh, that's too bad. my school's chapter is actually very active. we have "projects" every month. this month we volunteered at a women's shelter, previous months we had a tsunami relief fund drive, next month we are organizing and holding a senior citizen prom! anyway, as far as putting stuff on the application, just write down anything that fits. good luck glass_shard, i hope you get in.

My chapter is pretty active, too. The members are very enthusiastic and involved, so I can't wait to get in. :)
The juniors that apply usually have a good acceptance rate, but the sophmores applying have a hard time getting in, since they don't have as much leadership opportunities yet. I'm kinda weak in the leadership area...

National Honor Society is a huge joke. I'd do it, just for the resume filler, but its repuation far outshines its actual worth.

I am actually secretary of NHS this year. Our chapter is pretty active. We've held many fundraisers throughout the year.

I have a question: for NHS, is there an age limit or something? Our school allows 4th qtr juniors (and beyond) to apply, but I've heard that some other schools let freshmen in, too

Well, NHS is for juniors and seniors only, but you have to apply the year before. Some schools only let juniors apply. At certain schools, there's another program, called Junior NHS, for sophmores and freshman.

At my school, students are invited to apply for NHS sophomore or, and if they are not yet in, junior year. Our organization is composed of juniors and seniors only.

i am vice pres of NHS at my school, but we dont have to apply for it. if our grades are up to par, we automatically get inducted on honors night. we dont have dues either. this year, we have only done three things. 1) collected donations for tsunami, 2) sold shamrocks for muscular dystrophy 3) pennies for patients.

You don't have to apply at your school? x_X
At my school, students with 3.5 or higher got an invitation letter earlier this week. They have to fill out this five page application and get recommendations from teachers, then write a short essay. The facaulty commitee reviews it all and then they choose. It's pretty hard to get into the club at my school.

just to be a memeber? dang!

I know! :(
But this is a big deal at my high school, so there's a big fuss over it.
Out of the 89 candidates this year, probably only 16 people in my grade make it in. I should probably relax a little, though. If I don't make it, I can always try again next year...

Ours is kinda messed up. ppl that didn't get in our smarter then some in it because they didnt have enough "activity points" for school activities. and they give more points for sports then other clubs so a lot of non atheltic ppl complain about that. otherwise our sections were the same as urs.

Our NHS is incredibly active in the community - we've always got something going on at a shelter, and we usually volunteer at the grade schools in the area, and every few weeks there is a community event (fairs, auctions, etc.) that NHS students volunteer at.

Glass_Shard's NHS sounds similar to ours...its pretty bad, colleges basically expect you to be in this, and I'm sure it looks bad if you aren't...however, there isn't a standard system, so some people are virtually guaranteed acceptance, while those who are similarly (or better) qualified at other schools don't get in.

It's simple.

NHS is only worthwhile, even on your app, if you DO something. Even if you're holding the president position, you have to DO something worthwhile to make it count.
