Nhs

So I got into NHS last month. Is it worth updating colleges on? This is the only thing I would be updating on. I'm thinking it's probably not worth it?

It’s not worth it.

God no. NHS is the biggest load of crap ever.

Colleges really don’t care about NHS. It’s overrated. I know cause I’m in it.

i think it’s overrated too. Besides, I don’t even know what NHS do anyway. And that’s why they’re not so important.

Have to disagree…

NHS is based on leadership, academics, service and character.

Send a SHORT email to each school indicating you are in NHS and induction ceremony date.

Congratulations. Nice job!

By the way–
I just cross referenced the top 10% of the class --both for the JRs and Srs at our student’s school and NOT all are in NHS–some yes, some no…

you have to have all of the credentials…I think some people are just so negative because they don’t get in…

so ignore the naysayers--

Congrats!

^maybe at your school. At my school here is how you get in

4 or more pre IB or IB classes: 3.00 GPA, 5 community service hours through the school.

less than that: 3.5 GPA, 10 outside hours and 5 hours through the school.

Why you are saying leadership/character is beyond me. It’s negligable community service, and it will already be reflected in his grades.

I think the only advantage is you get to wear the cool thing around your gown at graduation. I’m pretty bitter because I’m not in it lol.

haha, connor, that really is the best thing about being in nhs :]

Ya when you have to give a speech it’s like ohhh loserrr everyone else is in it but you.

haha, wait, speech for what?

NHS is a useless club (or society)…you do absolutely nothing and the standards are so low, that your whole graduating class gets in. A bunch of idiots who run it in my opinion.

I’ll add on to say it’s not worth informing colleges either. We don’t do anything (except for one induction ceremony), almost everyone’s in it, and we even don’t get to wear some special thing in graduation!

But it’s a club at least
And that itself looks good for colleges…
Right? =/

It’s a school by school basis. Some might do nothing. Some might be hardcore. It just depends on the school.

Agree with Zam, it varies by school. However, I also think it isn’t worth notifying the colleges. It’s not going to be determinative. If you really want to tell them, then it’s not going to do any harm. So do what you want, but it’s not something very selective schools are going to care about. Partly because huge numbers of applicants to those school also belong, and because since membership can mean so many different things at different schools, there’s just no way to assess it. If a person actually did something special besides grades (they’ll be seeing those already) that was part of joining or being a member, then letting them know what that special activity is (assuming it’s not already in your application) is probably more effective. But just becoming a member, in and of itself, is probably insignificant.

some chapters of NHS are much more active than others.
for us, only a handful get in each year, approved by a special panel. we hold fundraisers and several large activities throughout the schoolyear, and while we’re not THE MOST ACTIVE thing out there (cuz when you pick the people with the most service hours, they are probably also the busiest people in this school), we are certainly doing things.
if your NHS is actually selective and does various activities, it’s something worth notifying your colleges for. specify what you do as an NHS member and the activities you organize. if it’s anything like the other people have mentioned above me, then no.

Clubs themselves do not look good for colleges. Most colleges are indifferent towards generic clubs such as NHS.

Even if your school has a more selective NHS than most, all your membership signifies is qualities that should already be evident in your application. Unless you’ve taken on a leadership role or gotten really involved in a community service project in conjuction with the club, it matters naught.

NHS=BS so if you wanna update your colleges about BS then go for it
