Nice, warm east coast schools

Hi. I'm from long island, ny. I am a male senior in high school and want to go to school somewhere warm. My grades are a 90 gpa (3.5/4.0) and 1800 sat and a 28 act. So far I applied to tulane and college of charleston. What are some good warm weather schools on the east coast for me. I need fo receive some merit money*

Tulane is not an east coast school…it’s in New Orleans.

Do you mean schools that are on the eastern half of the US?

You say that you need merit money. An 1800 SAT/28 ACT won’t get you merit at Tulane. It’s very difficult to get accepted to Tulane with your scores. To get merit, you’d have to go down in ranking. Maybe Truman St, Troy St, Miss State or LSU.

What is your budget? How much will your family pay for college? That will largely determine where you should apply.

I see that you’ve already applied to Tulane. You need to start looking at the middle quartiles to see what your chances for acceptance are and your chances for merit.

Tulane Middle 50% of First-Year Students

SAT Critical Reading: 610 - 700
SAT Math: 620 - 700
SAT Writing: 620 - 710
ACT Composite: 29 - 32

These are ranges for the 2 middle quartiles of the school.

For you to be a candidate for merit, your scores need to be in the top quartile for the school. To have a good chance of acceptance, your scores need to be well in that middle range. Those with stats in the bottom quartile (or close to it) are often hooked applicants…athletes, URMs, etc.

Look at Flagler in FL, Eckerd in FL, Guilford NC

Flagler is very reasonably priced and a gorgeous school. These schools are a better match for you if you are aiming for any kind of merit award. Tulane will not offer you merit. College of Charleston is also too high a range school to offer you merit. You have to look at schools below your own stats. The three schools above are all better bets for merit aid. Flagler is already one of the best prices LAC’s. Good luck!

Merit money is not that important.

Okay, then just need a bit more info. Are you fairly mainstream, or more artsy…are athletics important? Music scene?

I’m thinking Furman right now, but not sure about fit…

And is the 3.5/4.0 GPA meaning unweighted/weighted?

Ole Miss

Fairly inexpensive to begin with for OOS and you will receive some merit aid weith your stats.

What can your family afford?

Elon, U of Miami, Furman

Probally around 30k. I will be getting money from outside scholarships. I’m into sports and am more mainstream kind of person. From what I’ve heard from people college of charleston seems very nice but I want some more warm schools (I know tulane is not on the east coast, I just applied because it was free).

Furman, Tulane, and Miami will be over $50,000 per year. Your family will provide $30,000. Are these outside scholarships going to make up the difference?

Cheaper alternatives…Ole Miss, Alabama, LSU, Elon, Flagler, Florida Southern.

Probally around 30k. I will be getting money from outside scholarships.

Before you count on outside scholarships to make up any differences for COA, please be aware that…

Private scholarships are

1) hard to get and often for small amounts.

2) often have a need component.

3) often are ONLY for freshman year. So how would you close the gaps for years 2, 3, & 4.

I think you need to include some schools that you know that your $30k plus any assured merit scholarship would cover. You can still try for private scholarships and such, but once you see that you’re either short of funds or the scholarships are only for one year, you’ll be glad that you’ve found some warm and affordable schools as back ups.

Probally around 30k.

And ask your parents for a firm number. You have no idea how many kids think their parents will pay X amount and then find out the real number is actually much different.

What do you want to study?
