OK, I get online to pay my sons' summer tuitions. Get all the way to the end, and discover there's a $10 "convenience" fee. Sheesh. I guess I'll transfer the $$ to the boys' accounts and let them walk over with a check. What a pain.

What other "nickel and diming" is going on at your kid's school?

Some government entities charge a 'convenience fee' also for submission of something online. I guess they think handling something that's an auto-pay, in soft-copy and paperless, or 'no-touch' is less convenient for them than having a person receive a pile of envelopes, have to open each one, rifle through the papers/checks, manually enter the item (like a check), and then move it on to the next station. The IRS is one of these. Instead of paying any electronic filing fees we send them a big envelope with lots of sheets paper in it.

There's at least some logic if they charge more if you use a CC since they have to pay the CC company a percentage but some of these allow you to use a CC by mail in which case they don't charge the fee.

It's really pretty crazy. This is just negative reinforcement.

You think that's bad, you should see my kids' school. They N&D everything. I write checks for the smallest amounts, trying to keep track of where everything is going. Colleges tend to be a lot better, but there are a lot of hidden costs. I don't dare add up what it is truly going to cost to send S to school this fall. I know COA, and estimates, but if we go there to settle him in, the costs will escalate. It's tough to keep it down.

"It's tough to keep it down."

Is that a Bill Clinton quote? :)

We have to pay an additional $225/semester for fees bc D is a music student. I guess addtl fees for music are typical so I am not too bent.

I WAS surprised that there was a charge for the mandatory Summer Orientation. I am sure this is typical as well but still I was taken aback bc as I said they do say it is mandatory. That fee is $140 and should I want to attend it is another $40-$115 depending if I want to stay on campus.

I will say this, my D's school has free laundry and free parking for all who live there so in the end it does even out. One of the schools she applied to was over $500 per year to park as a freshman!!

We recently received a bill for "dorm damage". Apparently the school assesses all inhabitants of each dorm for any and all damage to the physical plant of the dorm (even if your child was not responsible)
Our bill for fall semester was $14

S is taking a summer internship for credit but isn't in residence on the campus but they charge a "technology fee" of 100 anyway.

Momof2sons - we got a $10 for "dorm damage" and a $10 bill because the boys bathtub/shower wasn't clean enough...son says "shoulda used bleach". He paid both of the $10 items.

Momof3---If we get bill for this term for dorm damage Son be footing bill! LOL

My D is a music major and has to pay a locker fee in the music school. It's $15, but it's the principle of the thing. She hasn't enough time in between classes to run back to her dorm, get the thing and run back to class. Gosh, why did she give up the kazoo?

I'm really hoping we don't get a dorm damage bill. My son's roommate had an extension to stay an extra three days and his half of the suite was a mess. We cleaned kitchen, bath and bedroom till they were pretty spotless, but the living room was strewn with roommate's dirty clothes and books. No way we were tackling that.

When I received my acceptance to San Francisco State, I went ahead and applied for housing. Largely because they were the first school I was accepted to (They have rolling admissions, and I ended up finding out my acceptance only 10 days after I applied! And on my mom's birthday, no less.) and I wasn't sure where I would go yet.

In addition to the initial $55 application fee, there was ANOTHER $55 fee to apply for housing. I paid it, thinking no big deal.

Two months later, my acceptance to Sonoma came. I went online to rescind my acceptance to SFSU, only to find a big bold print letter that says, "HOUSING APPLICATION FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE."

Jerkfaces. -.-
