Nicknames in college!

I have a really common name (Michelle) and I'm tired of being one of a 5 or 6 different Michelles. I really like my name and I don't want to stray too far from it, but it's wearing on my nerves always being Michelle L. or the redheaded Michelle or the tall Michelle or whatever else. So when I go to college, I want to fill in the little box that says "Prefer to be called" with a less common nickname that I can start going by. Has anybody ever done this before, and with what kind of results?

Also, please help me pick my nickname! I've already thought of Mimi, Mia, Maya, Mischa, and Elle. Which one do like best? Any other suggestions?

We called my friend named michelle, mushy, but that only works if you're an attractive person, otherwise the nickname sort of backfires!

Haha, well I'm certainly not "mushy", I'm about 5'6", 110lbs. Some of my friends call me "Mish" but I wouldn't want to be putting that (or Mushy) at the top of my senior thesis. :)

The nickname we use for one of my friends with your same name is 'Mish' (or at least pronounced that way, I've never verified the correct spelling).

I like Michy

or Chelle is nice.. i call my friend that

How about "flounder?"

"Uh, what's my Delta Tau Chi name? ...Dorfman, I've given this a lot of thought. From now on, your name is Flounder." (Animal House)

hahahaha, I love that movie. Unfortunately I think I'd like it to be a little more feminine and pretty than that, though...

knoxxxville, you totally remind me of me!! my name's lauren and there are a bunch of other laurens at my school and i was thinking about going by my middle name (which is michelle, ha!) or a nickname in college but i haven't figured out the perfect one yet. I like "Chelle", personally...

i only know one michelle and people call her shelly.

swasesuww - don't go by Michelle! I only know 1 Lauren but I know 5 Michelles! You should go by Lo, it's a cute and pretty nickname for Lauren and plus it's the name of a pretty girl on 'Laguna Beach' :)

um i like Misha but then i get the thinkin of misha barton of the OC. u could be shelly though........

Chelle is so pretty!

How about Chevelle? Or Shell? Or Shell Oil? How about just Oil? That's what your nickname should be is "Oil"

"How did you get that interesting name, Oil?"

"Well, I was trying to think up a nickname for college, and somebody suggested that I go by Chevelle, and then he thought of Shell, like Shell Oil, and then we just shortened it to Oil."

"...Oh."

hahaha.

We call ours Miche, pronounced like Mischa but without the -a on the end (or like Michelle pronounced the french way (like in the Beatles song!) but without the -elle).

Calling someone Chelle just seems kinda odd to me. Like a seashell, or oil, or... I don't know.

Futher nicknames: Mitch, M Dizzle, Mika, or Ellehcim. (Pronounced "Ella-cim")

There was a R&B singer who just added an apostrophe in the last syllable to make it "Michel'le" pronounced Me-shel-lay.

You could always just go by "Em"

Haha, I kind of like Mika. :/ Em is actually really cute but everyone would think my name was Emily. And I'm laughing about that R&B singer.

I'm not a big fan of Chelle or Shelly, they seem sort of childish almost, and they're too obviously a nickname.

Mika is a cute name!!

I think I'm kind of leaning towards Mia...I do like Mischa too, but I think of Mischa Barton and I think everyone will.
