Anyone know how the nightlife for freshmen is?
Is it hard to get into clubs? Must we require ID?

some clubs are “18 to party and 21 to drink”. fake IDs are almost never worth it- either they’re so crappy a bouncer will laugh in your face (i’ve seen this) or they don’t even scan (seen this too. huge clubs will “scan” the back of an ID because giving alcohol to a minor can get them shut down).

So people just go into clubs that dont bother with ID?
Hmm 18 to party…quite original.

most clubs are 21+, but some are 18 to enter, 21 to drink.

If you can get a fake that scans, more power to you.

are there dorm parties? if so, what are those generally like for freshmen?

I think getting a fake ID is prob the best option then, right?
But then theres the part that you could get srewed for it…

My D is a freshman and she just told me that when she goes out with her friends they have had alcohol in the restaurants. I was suprised.

if it was a restaurant/bar, the waiter might not have carded them. bars have bouncers, and so do clubs.

lol, good luck at getting a GOOD fake in a post 9/11 Manhattan. they really cracked down on it. like bryanm said, if can even get a good fake. . .

dorm parties vary wildly. most dorm parties happen in upperclassmen dorms because the floors aren’t so small and they don’t get busted as quickly.

there ARE other things to do in Manhattan besides drink. i know that’s all “after school special”, but there’s a TON of nightlife in Manhattan that doesn’t revolve around alcohol.

missamericanpie,
I realize that. I was just offering the OP my thoughts. I wasn’t born yesterday. I do know how things work.

@milk

i didn’t mean to offend. i was offering that info more for the OP than you. my apologizes.

Just out of curiosity, what other nightlife is there? You mentioned that theres a lot to do that doesnt involve drinking/clubbing…

There are various sewing, book and juice tasting clubs and societies. My mom always recalls her time at NYU; instead of spending it getting wasted in a dorm and sleeping around, she was at the Sewing Society on the Upper East Side. She dearly loved it.

you can still go clubbing, you’ll just have to show ID that says you are 18. there’s comedy shows, hookah bars, concerts, jazz clubs, movies (independent ones, not just the megaplexes), theatre, art galleries. ticket central in the Kimmel Center offers discounted theatre, movie and concert tickets. there’s also parties in your dorm or parties in an upperclassmen dorm. check out Time Out NY or New York Magazine, they list the upcoming events for the weekend.

if you really want to blow $120 on a fake, it’s your money, i’m not gonna stop you. Welcome Week Leaders are trained to NOT tell incoming freshmen about where to get fake IDs, and we’re also trained to notify public safety of people on campus trying to sell IDs.

Wow sounds great, thanks a lot!
Cant wait for NYU!!

NYU is an undercover party school and dorm parties are few and far between. The clubs is where all the action is. Other things of interest could include a trip to Times square, Broadway, and the movies of course.

@next

i just think that most students don’t see a NEED to throw a dorm party when they’re in the middle of Manhattan.

(times square is only really good at 2 in the morning, when the lights are all on, and the tourists are at a minimum :-P)

i understand social life is a big part of college life, but honestly, why wud u risk so much with a fake id or whatever when u can just wait until ur 21? what are u gonna do when ur 21 if u break all the rules now?

and i just have to comment…comedy clubs are the BEST thing on earth. its always great going to one.

Buying a fake ID whether it works or not will kick you out of school. Now if that happens, what would you tell your parents and where you going to go for college (can’t tell them you left because you got kick out). Furthermore, getting a fake ID is illegal and will throw you in jail.

Honestly by second semester everyone has a fake. Either they buy it from a shady place on McDougal ($$$ and sometimes not very good…bouncers are trained to know these fakes), they use an older siblings (works best), use a photoshopped passport scan for the more lenient places (I’ve done this…at least if you get it taken away, which I never have, you’ll only have lost a piece of paper), or go all out and “edit” an old passport from a third world country that used to write on passports with a pen. You can even bribe bouncers at some bars and a couple clubs to let you in (this can be very expensive READ: over $50 per person). There’s a ton of places that have nights that are 18+ to party, 21+ to drink and even take college id. Webster Hall, and Pascha are notable examples of 18+ clubs; their venues are not very good but they definitely have the best DJs and events.

On a sidenote, you will not go to jail for a fake unless you give it to a cop, nor will you get kicked out of school. Even if you smoke pot in the dorms and are caught, they won’t call the police (and you’re kicked out of housing after 3 times). I’ve even been out with my RA drinking.

Enjoy NYU, I know you will.

Wow good to know thanks a lot!
