Hey guys, I'm thinking of applying to Duke for grad school and one of my concerns is finding an active nightlife scene. What's the scene there like for the 21+ crowd? Where do the grad students hang out? Thank you.

The 21+ crowd definitely hang out, more or less, at the Main Street bars (one of the Durham streets, extends right from Duke's east campus). I'm only a senior, but when I go out generally most of the people I meet are grad students. The Joyce and the Fed are both pretty popular but there are a few others. Typical bars...I find you can have a fun night with just your group of friends hanging out, or meet a ton of people, depending on what night it is, where you go, etc etc.

Wednesday nights at Tylers Taproom are also a lot of fun...Pint Night, so you get to try a new beer, get a free glass. That's usually a grad student/young professional or older crowd as well.

Other than that, I'm not really sure where grad students typically hang out all the time, but my guess is you'll have no problem finding people and a scene to hang out in. I wouldn't say it's an active nightlife scene in the sense that a big city like NYC/Chicago/LA would be, but there's things to do, people to meet, place to spend time.

^ pretty much a one street scene.

Think "Chapel Hill."
