I have been offered an internship in National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in Bethesda.
I would appreciate feedback , advice, tips from any previous interns / parents about their experiences.
Also , can anyone recommend a safe area to live near NIH campus ? I don't have a car.

You might try checking with some of the local colleges to see if they do summer sublets of dorms/student housing apts. (I’m pretty sure GW does. It was one of the options D2 looked into when she was offered a summer position at NINDS a couple of years back.)

One of D2’s sorority sisters is an intern at a federal agency in DC. Friend says the housing market is very fluid and vacancies come and go frequently whenever a roommate decides to move on/elsewhere/out. Keep checking Craig’s List frequently.

IIRC, NIH has a housing available board for its interns. you might shoot HR an emial asking about that.

Piggle, what are some of your other choices. Do they pay for everything, include housing and/or food? Programs can vary greatly with perks. I’d wait as long as you can to make your choice. I’m from the DC area, so I always picked programs in areas that interested me. (NYC two years ago, WashU last summer)

Actually two are from NIH itself. Two are from couple of university programs I applied to.
All are paid ( almost the same amount as the NIH ) and housing is provided for one program.
I was hoping to hear back from Texas based programs ( UTSW, Baylor, etc ) as well as Amgen.

If you think you have a chance for Amgen, I’d wait (it’s what I did last summer). If you have to accept a position before you hear from them all, then do that. I’m certain they plan for this.

BTW, why would you want to spend summer in Texas?? Summer in NYC was glorious, Texas would be an ordeal.
