Do you get paid for a NIH internship?

Congrats to everybody who's working at the NIH this summer! I worked at the NIAAA (Lab of Neurogenetics) two summers ago, and it was a fabulous summer in DC.

Hope you all have a great time!

(LiF -- yes, you do get paid for an NIH internship. It's not great pay -- it's a government job after all -- but it's a great experience and very helpful if you're looking to go to graduate/medical school in biology or related fields.)

I think I am going to bring my laptop with me. When I went to visit the lab, there weren't really any extra computers to use at this lab and I think I'd just like to have it with me for checking email and getting used to using it a bit before college starts.

Do any of you guys or former interns know of any places to go on the weekends or after work besides museums (especially around AU)?

Are there any places that have great live music?

What do (did) you guys do?

Haha, I spent all my time at the museums. I'm a dork.

There's also a free movie series on the Mall on... Tuesday nights? in the summer called "Screen on the Green." It was fun, relaxing, and free.

Awesome. Is there anything else? Anybody?

there's ALOT to do, much of it for free or little cost. bust out a copy of the washington post and thumb through the metro section =).

I want to do an NIH Internship for summer 2006. Do you pay for where you stay or is it paid for you?

Also, what are the requirments of the program?

Also, what is the website for the National Cancer Institute internship, I am having a hard time finding it...

how do we apply for an internship at NIH and what age do u have to be?

Is there any grade requirements?

All right, to answer your questions, you must be at least 16 years old before you start your internship at the NIH. It's pretty difficult to get an internship unless you know someone that works there, so ask around. The selection is made by individual scientists who usually aren't picky about grades, although some are. I'm sure as long as you have above a 3.5, you'll be fine. Don't know any other requirements, but to let you know, it is a lot of fun and you get to meet great people here.

Unfortunately, the NIH does not provide housing for the SIP program for high school students, so it is tailored more for those who live in the D.C. area. Of course, if you're crazy like me, you can also search for housing at local universities and apartments here. Make sure you do this well ahead of summer so you can get a place to stay, and obviously apply early!

If anyone here is more physics/chem/math/engineering oriented.. U.S. Naval research lab in D.C. has great internship opportunities. They took a few high school students(me!) for less money but you do actual research. You pretty much work with a mentor on his project/or develop your own project. You come out of the summer internship/mentorship with cash, a pressearch paper that could be publishable, and a possible co-authoring with your mentor's paper. not a bad deal at all! Plus you do a lot of real work and they treat you like a researcher. I'm working with $1 million+ worth of equipment and my mentors don't have any objections with it!

Funny guys! My roommate's interning at NIH too. She's been there since beginning of June. We are staying at AU.

Terrible pay? I don't think so from what I've heard from my friend.. I'm SO jealous of her. They do pay for the metro too!

They do pay for the Metro, which is great, but it's definitely government pay... I think I make almost twice as much working at a lab on my college campus than I did the summer at the NIH.

Are any of yall doing the poster day thing?

Haha, JJKitty, was that in support or refutation of the contention that it's a low-paying internship? :)

Neither. Just given the facts.

Do they require any previous research experience? I'll have four years of chemistry (8th-11th), three years of physics (8th-10th), and two years of bio (8th-9th) by next summer, but I've never worked in an actual research lab.
