NIH Summer Internship Program *2016-2017*

@WCEdmonds I know, I’ve already looked through people I’m most interested in the NIEHS, its just that I would prefer the people I emailed at the main campus in MD

@Tobster18 Oh, OK then. Just wanted to make sure you knew!

I go to a typical public school. Honestly, its quite underperforming, the average ACT is like 21 and the SAT is like 1100. I found about NIH thru college confidential. I am in the science magnet program at my school.

I go to a small public school ranked pretty high in the country (like top 100) but surprisingly, there is no science anything programs unless you count AP classes or science clubs. :expressionless: I do all my research with a mentor at UCLA.

I haven’t published my paper but I have presented it at a lot of places so I have a pretty fleshed out paper.

@WCEdmonds I have not heard of that book but I just did a quick google search and I wish I was born earlier.

Do you guys think they take diversity into account, like URM?

@Tobster18 Probably not…I don’t think I’ve been asked.

LOL @csunshine91. I was born in Feb 2001, so I’m set for life!

I go to a pretty well-known private school in Brooklyn, NY (Saint Ann’s School). My school doesn’t do grades (so no GPA and no class rank) and is against APs, so it’s a bit weird.

@WCEdmonds WOAH, no GRADES! I can’t even imagine school without grades!

Yeah, ikr. It’s pretty great. We don’t even take any standardized tests until 10th grade, and then only PSAT and Aspire.

Do you guys think I should expand my search of PIs to people who are not on the previous list? All my other PIs are from the previous list and accepted high schoolers.

@csunshine91 Don’t waste your time doing that, I did with 5 PIs. All of them responded back saying they don’t take high school interns.

Ok, thanks for telling me. I’m currently constructing a specific email for one PI because this other PI said that I should try him. But, last year, he only took an undergraduate. It’s worth a try though.

I think you should. The one who’s interviewing me didn’t do Poster Day last year at all. And it definitely won’t hurt.

My first interview is on Friday at 3:30 PST! Anxious!

Wait, I have a pretty important question about this program. So, say you get accepted, but you live nowhere near any one of the program sites. Is there any residential aspect, or what the heck what would you do? I know you can’t get a hotel unless your 18, so do you guys know anything more than I do?

@java23 There is no residential aspect. You must either know someone nearby, stay at a college nearby (many colleges offer conference housing for 18+), or stay by yourself as I am doing. I, personally, am staying at an Airbnb, because it simplifies the legality of renting to a minor. And the stipend (I think 1600 a month or so) can and should be used for housing/food. Good luck!

@WCEdmonds @java23 Wait, you guys already got accepted?

@Tobster18 No, sorry; let me clarify. The above applies, should I get accepted. I don’t think @Java23 has been either.

@WCEdmonds Oh ok, that makes sense

How long are you guys going to wait till you send follow up emails to people who haven’t responded? Are you going to send emails to these people, or just move on?

@Tobster18 I think that getting no response is a response in itself. I won’t be following up.
