Nitze Scholars!

Hey guys, I just got my likely today for the Nitze Scholarship and the Academic Achievement one.

Are any of you guys going down for February 8th?

iMac15, if you don't mind me asking, did you apply ED or RD? I'm wondering if your notification means we might also be hearing soon.

I applied RD, and sent my app in on the day of the deadline.

The letter was dated 1/19, but I received it yesterday, and I live in NY.

Thanks for the info, iMac. I don't know that my D has the superlative stats for this honor - but it would be great to get some hint that she will be accepted so we could arrange to visit early enough to get cheap flights. Will you be visiting on Feb 8th?

Yeah I got my letter a couple days ago too! I'll be there on the eighth. I don't really know if i want to attend or not yet though. The 8th will probably make a big difference for me. Is SMCM your top choice?

I most likely will be visiting. It's not my first choice, I first heard about it from a PR guidebook. But it seems awesome!

i visited it this summer. it was nice, like SUPER chill feeling and friendly, but i couldn't really tell since there was no one there... but the possibility of a full ride is QUITE good. I'm excited to check it out while classes are going though. Started thinking about the essay yet?

WAIT. This offers a full ride? I thought it was $3,000 plus any other scholarship?

And I know they accept 16, but do we know how many the offered?

oh. you're right. i just reread the letter. it mentioned that like some may get a full tuition waiver, but not so much in connection to JUST the nitze thing. haha it's a bit less appealing now. oh well, i'm still psyched to check it out. I thought they only accepted 14 though. and i looked around to find how many people they send the letters to, but i can't find a number anywhere.

yeah 16 this go round. Got mine this week too! So excited. see you guys down there on the 8th - i definitely wonder how many ppl they send this to... o well, we'll see... anyone going to brunch beforehand??

I'm thinking about it, but i probably have to go down alone so i might not. Either way though, good luck!

For a second I thought it conflicted with the Superbowl and I seriously was having trouble making up my mind.

But yea, I'll be there!

sweet, i guess i'll see guys there... not that i'll know it.

Congratulations to all of you who have heard about this opportunity! SMCM is an awesome school if I say so myself, spent 4 awesome years there graduating in 1986. Just visited with my son and daughter for an admissions tour last week. They told us some scholarship decisions were ready to go out, and I am guessing they were talking about you guys! The coolest thing for me this past week was meeting up with some of my old professors. Turns out my favorite Econ. prof. is now the head of the "make your own major" program (Don Stabile). I think you will all love your visit to SMCM. If you have never been there, pay close attention as you round the last turn and the river opens up to your right with the campus on your left. It sold me! I look forward to seeing what you all have to say after the 8th. If you have any questions, ask away.

P_Moscoso, I'll accept your gracious offer to pose a question....

Were you an in-state student? My d is applying from out of state - far out of state! - and I'm wondering if that difference would set her apart too much from the other kids, given that it's a public - and therefore MD-dominated - school.

Also, the remote location, while beautiful, makes the trek to/from the airport a bit harder - was that a hassle, or were you close enough to home so that you always drove?

Thrilled to hear the endorsement from someone who has actually been there!

Yes, I was an in-state student and used to drive about 2.5 hours home (around DC beltway). That drive is now much closer (better roads) and it took us 2 hours a couple of weeks ago. Keep in mind I was there in the 80s, but there were students from all over the country back then also. My roommate was from New York freshman year. There were kids from MA, NM, even CA to name a few. I never felt they had any disadvantage being from farther away. I had a car on campus, but plenty did not. People were always willing to give each other rides to the airport, train station, home. I remember taking many friends home to my parents' for special weekends. However, there is so much to do on campus that if one gets involved in that, going home on weekends stops after freshman year. Most kids only went home for holidays and breaks. As far as getting to airports...check with the admissions office, I do remember some kids getting together and hiring air port shuttle vans to get them there. I was a resident assistant starting my sophomore year and I remember driving kids to the airport on my way home for several holidays. It really is a healthy campus and given that it is now an Honors College (the whole school is honors, not just a group of students) I would recommend that your d seriously consider it. Good luck and keep us posted! Let me know if I can answer anything further.
I majored in Economics and doubled in Political Science. It is a great place to have a degree from, has openened many doors over the years. All the best!

P_Moscoso, thanks so much for that endorsement! I'm getting very excited about visiting; hopefully this will be an option for my D next year.

DD just received a letter stating she was a "St. Mary's Academic Achievement Award recipient". There is a St. Mary's Scholars Day on 2/27. It says that even though the admissions staff has not yet selected the class of 2013, she will be admitted.

Congrats to your D, eddieodessa! My D received the same letter yesterday--a nice surprise, since we didn't think we would hear until late March/early April. We're hoping to attend the 2/27 event, since we didn't have time to get there last summer (I think we pm'd about the school)

My S received that letter also. We are from out of state; are any of you?
