NJ CC Student wanting to transfer to a four year college

Hi,

I am currently a 22 year old county college student in NJ desperately wanting to transfer out to any four year university/college.
I have a very complicated academic history as I was originally an undergraduate NYU student right after graduating H.S ('07). I was dismissed from NYU due to not meeting GPA requirements of the school in my sophomore year- which caused quite a trauma for me and my parents. Right afterwards, I took some courses at a Community College, in hopes of being readmitted to NYU. Although I did not get an AA degree and lacked a few credits, I nevertheless tried applying to several universities like Rutgers and again to NYU. After being rejected from all the universities I've applied to and NYU, I transferred to another County College which made it easier for me to commute. I changed my major to Liberal Arts AA, and knew I wouldn't be able to transfer to a university within the normal 2 year time frame. I am expected to graduate at the end of this school semester after taking some summer courses.

I am worried that the record of academic dismissal from NYU will greatly reduce my chances of admissions to a university (I am aiming for state universities).
Is it mandatory that I send out my academic transcript from NYU to the schools I am trying to apply for? Or do i have the option of not sending out the NYU transcript?
Also, are involvements in ECs at CC quite important in transferring out? If so, what type of ECs are strongly recommended? I am a Liberal Arts major at CC and am considering joining the Rotary Club, Math Club, and the Phi Theta Kappa in my spring semester.

Currently, my GPA is a 3.5.

Also, since I am not actually able to graduate CC in the recommended 2 years ( I was a part time student for a few semesters during CC), is it a detriment to my application?

For previously academically dismissed students, what in my application should I emphasize the most? Am I actually required to write a separate essay regarding the circumstances of my academic dismissal?

Also, which universities should I try to aim for, considering my messy/undesirable academic history (I am in NJ)? I am willing to go to schools in other states as well. Do have a chance at CA State Uni-s?

Also, I took my SATs 5 years ago. Are these scores still valid for submitting in my applications? or do i have to retake them ? Hopefully I don't have to retake them, as my SAT scores are quite high (770 in Math, combined score of 2100).

Were any of you in a similar situation and can recommend important tips?

Please help! : (

You must send all transcripts when applying, the check your college record here:

[National Student Clearinghouse: Degree verification & enrollment verification](http://www.studentclearinghouse.org/)

The weight of ECs will depend on the college; some colleges are more numbers oriented and others are more comprehensive. The ECs to do are the ones that you’re interested in or that relate to your academic interests.

Many CC students take longer than 2 yrs, that shouldn’t be a problem.

The CA says this:

[quote]
Disciplinary History
Have you ever been found responsible for a disciplinary violation at any educational institution you have attended from the 9th grade (or the international equivalent)
forward, whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral misconduct, that resulted in a disciplinary action? These actions could include, but are not limited to: probation, suspension, removal, dismissal, or expulsion from the institution. Yes No

If you answered

I am not trying to transfer in to a UC college. I actually go to Community College in New Jersey.

If you weren’t asking if you have a chance at California public universities, what were you asking?

That was my assumption, thus my comments about being OOS for CA publics.

How of curiosity what were your stats when you applied to rutgers and what was your major?

i had a 3.6 GPA and my major was mathematics…although i didn’t actually get all my credits in…i knew i probably wasn’t going to get into rutgers… i wish there was some way I could get back into NYU… damn academical dismissal ruined my life and it’s not like I was partying away in college. i was actually quite depressed and homesick which contributed to my low grades.

Academic dismissal is an administrative process, not a disciplinary action or misconduct violation, so you wouldn’t have to fill out that section of any application. That section refers to dismissal/suspension/expulsion for specific bad acts, such as vandalism, drug abuse or cheating/plagiarism. Flunking out is evidence of academic unpreparedness or inattention, not of malicious behavior.

However, you certainly may want to write an essay addressing the history of your poor academic performance and how you believe your present achievement demonstrates your ability to succeed today.

Agree with polarscribe. Address your previous issues is your best bet right now. The main concern here is how you solve these problems. Try ask yourself this 3 questions: 1) what you want to do for life 2) how you achieve that goal 3) what kind of people you are.

Have you Tried NJIT, Mammouth and the like? I think you may have the best chance to a lower ranked school then butt head with Rutgers or NYU…

Really? Rutgers is really that competitive? even the one in Newark?
How hard is it to get into Montclair State University from county college?
Also, I took the SATs about 4 years ago…are the scores still valid to be sent out to colleges?

I don’t really think they are that competitive but as far as math goes they are ranked 20th for it, 9th for logic, 4th for discrete math, 12th Algebra/number theory/something else. So it might be harder to get in for those majors.
This is their grad school but I’m willing to bet their undergrad math program is just as good.

I appreciate all the answers so far, but does anybody have any answers to those specific questions?

If I were you I’d keep trying rutgers. I’m actually from ca and personally I’m not a big fan of the cal states but the UCs are pretty awesome. Keep in mind you need 60 transferable units and some coursework done. They also have GE requirements.
