Rowan, TCNJ or Rutgers:
Which has the best program for engineering, civil engineering in particular, and why so? I've been trying to do research about these programs, but I've gotten little results on anything but Rutgers. Thanks in advance for the help.

I’d like to know too. I got into Rutgers and Rowan for Electrical. Didn’t apply to TCNJ, because I figured I’d choose Rutgers over it anyways. Did you consider NJIT? I’m kind of mixed on that school

Try looking into Stevens in Hoboken.

Rowan has the newest and most modern engineering program in the northeast. All new facilities, young professors (all PhD’s), small classes, no TA’s and is very highly rated. At Rutgers, NJIT and Stevens the first two years you are mostly instructed by TA’s who are not trained teachers and for whom English is not their native tongue. At TCNJ the administrations efforts are focused on establishing a reputation for being a great LAC, consequently the engineering school doesn’t receive much attention.

[Rowan CoE](Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering | College of Engineering | Rowan University)

FWIW, the age of facilities plays almost no part in the quality of the program. That said, Rowan may still be great school (I don’t know anything about it personally) but the new facilities is not really part of that argument. I had an acquaintance use those grounds to claim that Mizzou was a better engineering school than UIUC. I just laughed.

Rutgers

TCNJ
Rowan

Thanks for the feedback. I realize that Rutgers is probably ranked the best, but I have hard times learning in massive classrooms, so I’m not too sure as to whether or not I would be able to do well. Any more information/replies?

Rowan is a real up-and-comer in the engineering world. As stated earlier, it’s put a LOT of money into its facilities and is trying to make a name for itself.

That being said, when comparing it to Rutgers, you really should concentrate more on the other factors like school size, location, and all those “fit” things. Where would you be happy? Both schools would give you a good engineering education, but Rutgers has more name recognition outside of the Mid-Atlantic states, a big-school athletic presence, and greater opportunities to study other subjects (or change majors without a transfer, if necessary). Rowan will have smaller class sizes and a greater opportunity to interact with your professors. Very much the simplistic analysis, but those are the sorts of things you need to think about. What’s important to you?

^ That’s a good point. I know Rowan is too new to have the recognation of my other choices (Rutgers,Drexel). But I do think it’s a good school. I visited campus and absolutely loved the vibe I got there. People were friendly and lots to do on campus.
