NJ Governor School 2008

YAY. Who's applying?

I'm deciding between applying to Science or Engineering, though I may not apply at all. The application from my school is binding if accepted, and I'd much rather do RSI if I were accepted. I bet people every year have had this problem before, do you guys have any advice? (Somewhat cross-posted in HS forumn)

I went to NJ Gov. School of Engineering last year, 1) Acceptance isn't binding, that's hy they have a waitlist... I don't know where you heard that from. 2) My time at Gov. School was amazing, if you want to know details, I'll be glad to talk to you... message me...

went to nj gov school for international studies 07 ...which is by far THE BEST HANDS DOWNNNN...AWESOME experience...go for it...its not binding (when u get the acceptance letter they ask u like...if u are unable to come to this program which program r u going to...) so yea...apply to both if u want (more chances)...just my two cents

When's the application deadlines for your schools? I missed out on mine because I found out about it one day before the deadline.....

tunit, do you have any specific info about the international studies school. I'm interested in either that or the science one.

anyone know how important the essays are for visual arts?

You know on the applications where you have to sign off on "I am willing and able to participate"... Does that make the application binding?

i doubt the essays are that important for visual arts... i did mine during study hall right before sending them off (not recommended). they care about your artwork first and foremost.

ummm... technically you can tell them you're not going, since there is that waitlist, but it depends on the school. my school, for example, was extremely unhappy that i turned down governor school last year. in retrospect, i shouldn't have applied since i was applying to another program (even though i didn't think i would get into either). you should contact your school if you're concerned about the binding thing so there's not a huge conflict come april.

im applying for science...does anyone know how much the essays count for?

I went to the governor's school for engineering last year, and I'd say that the essays count for a good deal. Like college admissions, many people who apply to gov school have really good grades and subject related ECs. The essays are a chance to be original and really tell the readers "HEY, I WANT TO BE AN ENGINEER (or whatever school you're applying to)". That came from the guy who read the engineering applicant's essays himself. Try to be original in them.

I am applying for the sciences but can anyone explain the whole application process because our counselors havn't really told us anything yet.

I am applying for creative writing, but that gives me less than two weeks to produce the 6-10 page manuscript plus the autobiographical statement and the essay on why I want to go to gov. school. Sweet Jesus, how am I going to do it?! How much time has everyone else been given between receiving the nomination and the application deadline?

I got nominated for International Studies. Does anyone know what's the most important part of the application?

I got nominated for voice and am in the process of making my tape... they barely gave me any notice too.

Are engineering and general sciences the most competitive out of all the gov schools of NJ?

Hey do the essays for international studies have to be formal, or can they be somewhat creative?

i'd say a lil bit of both would do...

Slshi: i think stats (gpa, psats, research projects/science awards) are much more important in sciences one than they are in like international studies, even tho last yr, there were 2 kids at internationals one with 2400s lol (its funny too cuz half the kids in the international studies ones wanted to go premed and/or business...)

I just finished writing my application (it's due tomorrow for us). Now for the editing part :)

for the engineering school, is it better to just say straightforwardly 'why i want to be an engineer' . i mean, is that basically wat they want to know, esp. in the autobiography, wehre it asks for ur current and future ambitions. it doesnt really want ur life story does it.

DONE! (I think.)

I'm applying for science, but for the autobiographical statement, I wrote about my past interests, what spurred my current interest, my current interest, and future plans. I felt that accurately answered everything they were looking for. Funny thing is that in future plans, one of my possible college majors was engineering. Heh.
