NJ Governor's School(s)

Is anyone applying to one of the two schools?

I'm applying to Drew U's sciences school, but I know the competition's gonna be craaazy.

I’m applying to the Governor’s School of Engineering and technology (that is, if my school nominates me). I’m not sure how tough the competition will be for this school. What are your stats?

As far as I know, the competition’s pretty intense. I’ve seen some impressive applicants get waitlisted/rejected.

My stats? Uhh.

PSAT: 214
GPA: 98/100 [rough guess]
Recs: didn’t see them. I’d imagine they’re pretty good though.
Essays: good, I’m very pleased with them.

wow you guys are early! I just got the info last week
do you guys know if the essay should be really self advocating or more humble?
Structure or free/train of though like?

bump.
who else is applying??

Hey guys, I’m applying for the Sciences too! I should be my school’s nominee but we’ll see. I really want to get in but I don’t think it’ll happen…

I’m applying to the Sciences… does anyone know how much weight they put on the essays? UGHHH.

how are you guys doing on your essays?

I’m almost done with the first one for Sciences…

I’m applying to Engineering…
My stats are about as good as they can get, but I know that it can be super competitive
I really want to go, though, so I hope I get in!!

Is this program really that competitive? Also, which is harder to accepted to: Sciences or Engineering?

Well, the acceptance rate is about 20%, which isn’t that bad but you also have to take into account the fact that only the best people from each school are nominated. And I have no idea which one is harder to be accepted to; based solely on my school, it seems like fewer people get into engineering, but then my school is not necessarily an accurate representation of the average school.

Is it alright if I don’t participate in science ECs because my school doesn’t really have them and that I pursue this interest outside of school in the summer time and through hard classes?

I haven’t even started my essays yet… Do you guys know if I can send in my SAT scores even with a 2010 PSAT? My PSAT math is 60 points lower than my SAT math.

dont send in your SAT. i heard they really really prefer psat.

The application used to ask for SAT too. Couldn’t hurt if it’s higher.

My impression is that the engineering program tries to accept a large proportion of kids from the poorer NJ public school districts–think very smart kids with less access to enrichment opportunities because their schools don’t offer as much.

The science program did not seem to select kids that way.

What’d you guys write for the “discovery” topic for the sciences school?
I’m not sure what the point of this essay is. It doesn’t reveal anything about ourselves or why we like science…or anything. Are we supposed to subtly add info about ourselves in this essay??

Beats me… I don’t know what to put in that essay without it being too a) obscure b) obvious.

Whatever…the competition’s really tough at my school anyway so I probably won’t get in.
Should the discovery essay be written on a really broad topic like the periodic table, the atom, the electron, etc., or something really specific?
UGH

Wait - you’re not confirmed to be a nominee from your school yet?
