Sunshine! You’re in for a FANTASTIC summer!

If you have any questions at all about the experience, join the NJSP 2009 facebook group. It’s private, but I’ll let you in. Someone from your year will inevitably start a 2010 group. I’m jealous of you guys!!!

I got waitlisted I sent an email to Mr. Sauerman about what I’ve learned from the application process and how I really want to go, but is there anything else I can do to get myself to the top of the waitlist (besides pray that a Scholar gets in to TASP or gov school, of course)?

And sunshine, congratulations! I hope you have an awesome summer.

Hey everyone-

I just got my acceptance letter today. I fell on the floor upon reading the first line, haha. My mom flipped out too. I’m really pumped for this summer - it’s going to be so awesome.

To everyone that got waitlisted or w/e – there are other programs, so please don’t let this break your heart.

Anyway, I’m incredibly excited. can’t wait.

Thanks for the tips on the interview process =D

oh lol I’m going to set up a NJSP 2010 group on facebook.

Search “NJSP 2010” on facebook =D.

There is honestly no way to get off of the waitlist in a timely manner – perhaps you could get bumped up on the wait list, but the only way to actually get into the program from the waitlist is for someone else to drop out. So you have to hope for that; that’s all. If anything else, two people from the program last year were from the waitlist; so it doesn’t NOT happen where people don’t get off of the waitlist.

Hey… i got my letter yesterday and got waitlisted… i literally cried my eyes out… im so upset i was really looking foward to this… and god… im still hoping. but im upset now…
the worst part was i made 3 new friends but now i won’t be able to meet them…

@ sunshine: Congrats!!! i hope u have an amazing summer

Hi everyone. I just found this website. Congrats to everyone who was accepted. I just got my letter yesterday that I was waitlisted. I am pretty upset about it because I know that most people who are accepted attend. Does anyone know how long the waitlist is? It says, “we are retaining your name as part of a short waiting list,” but there are already two other people from the waitlist on here. I’ve wanted to go to this program for so long and have no back up plans. Oh well I guess I’ll just have to wait a few more weeks with my fingers crossed. If you were accepted and are thinking about not going, know that you will be making someone on the waitlist very happy.

Thanks so much you guys! Again, congratulations to everyone for making it so far; regardless of what your letter said, you’re obviously still fantastic.

I can’t wait to meet the rest of the group! Counting down the days… ;)

The waitlist is 10 people long (5 boys, 5 girls).

Thanks, proviso. I wish they could just take 49 this year.

Hi all. I too have been accepted into the program and am incredibly conflicted. My summer job opportunity will pay about 8 grand for the summer, and I also was planning on partaking in several basketball camps with my high school team.

Can someone please persuade me to go through with NJSP? Specifically, how prestigious, exactly, is this program?

Thanks

There are probably better people to answer that question, but here are some reasons:

It’s at Lawrenceville for 5 weeks which is AWESOME.

You were selected as 1 of 39 in the entire state (congratulations!)

Check out the colleges that past scholars have attended! ([New Jersey Scholars Program](http://www.lawrenceville.org/njsp/))

It’s going to be really fun and a great experience (at least from what I hear!)

Also, I’ve heard it’s quite prestigious… browse their website that I posted to check it out further. But I definitely suggest attending - even though that job seems extremely lucrative! ;)

Whatever your decision turns out to be, good luck - plus don’t feel bad because there are always people on the waiting list who would love to be in the program!

Best of luck.

Just going from my experience (and I hope to see you there hoopaholic225 the 5 weeks are going to be so awesome!!), “big schools” definitely know about this program. My back-ups were Harvard SSP & Penn Pre-college, and both knew about this program when I mentioned that this was another program I wanted to attend. Idk if that helps :D.

Basically, if your worry is that only people/contacts in NJ will know about this program, that’s really not the case.

Congrats on the job, though. Where are you working that you’re getting 8 grand; that sounds awesome!!

Hoop,

My daughter was accepted to NJSP 2010 last week, as well – and although she really (REALLY) needs a job, won’t be able to audition for several musicals she had her eye on this summer, probably won’t be able to go to her sport’s summer HS camp with the team unless it’s in early August, and (most upsetting for her) it might affect her getting named captain on her team this summer/fall , which she really wants – the phrase “once in a lifetime academic opportunity” was the theme and made the decision quick and easy here at our kitchen counter on Thursday night.

This NJSP gig seems pretty well-known, and pretty prestigious, and what a great opportunity for intellectual types, per se, no?

But … 8K over a summer for a 17YO? That’s pretty major.

On the basketball camp thing … are you pursuing athletics post-high school or is that just a good form/fun thing with your HS team? I ask because while scholar-kid is a jock, the sister is an uberjock and we treat her camps/exposure with a different attitude.

Have your parents expressed an opinion on your options?

@Hoop -

Wow… 8 GRAND?! That’s a pretty impressive sum of money - I’m incredibly jealous of that offer.

Anyway, speaking on behalf of my past experiences as a NJ scholar, here are a few of my opinions that you may/may not find helpful:

Yes, the program is pretty much what everyone says it is (a fun and enriching learning experience that is worth the time, assuming you don’t have any other conflicts). But should you choose not to attend, it’s not like it’s the end of the world - NJ scholars isn’t the ONLY incredible learning experience you’ll get.

Going to the program merely because it’s “prestigious” (although I would like to argue that it is not quite as well-known as the NJ governor’s school) is not a well-qualified reason at all. You should go because you really want to go and dedicate a huge chunk of your summer learning about civil rights. If you’re having serious doubts about it, then the program won’t be nearly as fun as you may have wanted it to be.

Rather than asking yourself, how much basketball will have an effect on my future (i.e. in the winter season & perhaps in college), ask how much do I love basketball? If it’s something not very important to you, it’s one more reason to join the program. Otherwise, you may not want to.

It seems to me that either decision you pick will definitely have its negative sides to it. My advice? Select the side that seems more attractive to you. Either way, I’m sure you’ll have a fantastic summer!

Hoops-

Remember, also, that you still have 1/2 of summer left for whatever you want to do (like athletic exposure…which is important to me as well, haha). I’m sure the job would understand if you wanted to work for 1/2 of the time (and perhaps 1/2 of the cash) if you wanted to go to NJSP.

@aero — I’m a caddie at a highly prestigious golf course, and I will definitely be able to commence work when I get back.

@ everyone else… Thanks for the advice. I just checked the yes box on the app and I’ll see you in Lawrenceville!

From the impression I’ve gotten of the campus I’ll be able to stay active with basketball during the program, but more importantly I will be a part of a great opportunity.

What are the dorms like?

did anyone get a rejection letter yet?? I mean, they should send them out at the same time as the acceptances right? I know I didn’t get in even though the program sounded amazing, but it doesn’t really matter for me because I got in to Governor’s School. but i still want my rejection letter!! did anyone receive one?

WAHHHHHHHHHHHH I WANT TO GO BACK :'(

honestly the best summer/experience/time of my life.

if any prospective candidates want to message me or anything PLEASE do and i will gush about it for hours.

by the way, njsp 2010 is the best – we’re all obsessed with each other and bonded on really personal levels. AHHHHHHHHHHHH can’t wait to smother the next generation scholars with good feedback on njsp
