Will being undecided work against my daughter when she applies? We've agreed she'll more than likely stay in NJ so we're looking at in-state schools.

Also, her SAT scores are not great (M 510, CR 520, W 560) but she has good grades, honors classes, will have 4 AP classes upon graduation, 60+ hours of community service and ECs. She'll be retaking the SATs in March, but I'm honestly not expected a huge jump in scores.

Your daughter will be fine applying as undecided to pretty much any school. If she can get her scores up a bit, maybe try the ACT, she’ll have a good chance at Rutgers New Brunswick, a solid education.

I’m not going to recommend Rutgers because EVERYONE GOES THERE- and I would hope your daughter doesn’t want to go to the same school as all her high school classmates. TCNJ is a good school, if she can get in. A less selective option would be Ramapo College, still a good school. Rowan University is another good one.

Thank you. We’ve visited Rutgers-NB for Rutgers Day and she wasn’t comfortable there. We’re going to check out Rowan, Stockton, Ramapo, Monmouth and a few others. Hopefully she’ll do better on next SAT but, unfortunately, she’s really not putting much effort into it. She’s never been good at standardized testing, yet does well in school. I’m hoping she’ll find a few schools she really likes and that might light a fire for her to try harder.

Will definitely look into ACT.

ETA: We’ll also be visiting TCNJ but I’m thinking that will be a reach school for her.

My first suggestion would obviously be Rutgers but she did not like that. I certainty do not blame her, back when I was accepted I rejected the idea of attending without even visiting since I was adamant on getting out of the state.

Definitely look at TCNJ, I have heard it is absolutely gorgeous and has an excellent academic reputation but would probably be a reach with those SATs but worth a try. If I was to stay instate that would have been my top choice since I had zero chance at Princeton lol.

I have a good friend at Stockton, he seems to be enjoying it there and occasionally makes it to the beach and near by Atlantic City. I think his only complaint is that a good portion of the student body lives near the college and often go home on the weekends.

Other than that I would probably recommend Rider in Lawrenceville(although quite expensive).

We’ll probably still visit Rutgers again. Most of the tour was the science labs, which I was horrified to see looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in years. But my daughter won’t be spending much time in those, so it really shouldn’t matter much. LOL.

Strictly for in-state tuition we’ll be checking out many of the NJ schools. Wouldn’t have the first clue where to look outside of NJ, particularly given that she has no idea what she’s going to school for.

Thanks again for your replies. Much appreciated!

A friend has a daughter at TCNJ who went in undecided. When she finally decided on a major, she found that many of the classes she needed were holding spots for declaired incoming freshmen. It’s a great school but be sure to ask about undecided students. Also Monmouth is not a state school and tuition is high. I also visited Rutgers with my youngest and still laugh at how she was threatening to jump off the bus mid-tour except we had no idea where we were or how to get back to the car. Its another great school but not for everyone.

NJBlue: good to know about TCNJ and being undecided. Maybe it would be better to pick a major and then change later?

Glad we weren’t the only ones who weren’t thrilled at RU. And honestly, my daughter isn’t thrilled at the idea of going to school in Newark or Camden.

My D and I did not care for Rutgers. Rowan and TCNJ are very nice but TCNJ is very competitive. If you are looking for OOS try Westchester University of Pennsylvania- nice school and not too large. Not sure of the tuition there though.

Barrons, I realized the SATs are low for TCNJ – that would be her reach school. More realistic than NYU that she wants to apply to. ;)

Carly, right now Rowan is the one that she’s really into after researching the school on their website. We’re going to see it on the 26th. She still needs to get her SATs up for that, but I’m hoping the campus visit will help. Was unaware of Westchester and will definitely check into it. Thanks for the tip!

Rowan and Ramapo would be good choices. TCNJ is definitely a reach.
The OOS tuition at the SUNY schools is not much higher than instate in NJ, so worth looking into some of them.

My DD will be going to TCNJ this fall (applied ED), but last spring and summer we did tour some of the SUNY schools (New Paltz and Geneseo). She didn’t care for New Paltz (just felt she “wouldn’t fit it”) and really liked Geneseo. The OOS tuition isn’t too bad.
