Njgss 2012

Applications can be found here: Governor's School of New Jersey- 2012 Applications

If you are nominated by your school to attend, cross your fingers and good luck! It was truly the best experience ever. Ever.

^Srslytho. Apply. Give it a shot!

It was life-changing.

I was nominated by my school this year. For those of you who attended, how hard was the application process? And, overall, what was the best thing about the program?

Well the application itself is similar to that of a selective college’s. It requires PSAT scores, transcript, math teacher rec, science teacher rec, two essays, etc. Around 400 apply and 85 get accepted. Keep in mind you’re basically competing against 400 students at the top of their class in a state that’s super competitive. I don’t think anyone had below a 2200 or ACT equivalent in last year’s program; and over half the camp applied early to Harvard and Princeton alone this year.

That being said, while it seems like everyone is an overachieving sociopath, they’re really not. The students are super chill, the counselors are amazing, and the classes are for the most part pretty interesting and not graded so they’re not ridiculously intense or stressful. It’s truly just an enrichment program, both in sciences and in meeting other really cool talented people. You’ll make some of the greatest friends ever, so I guess in a sense that might be one of the best things about the program.

I think that they do admissions based on like a scored total. You get different scores for different parts of your application and then they rank you as an entire group… so it’s basically holistic except with some more objectivity. So not one thing matters infinitely more than the rest, but they like to see well-rounded students… so ECs and Recs and Essays are definitely very important. (You can still get in with like a 65-70 PSAT Math score as long as everything else you submit is very strong… although most applicants have perfect 80s if not 75+). I wouldn’t say the camp gets 85 of the most genius and talented science students in NJ (I mean those kids are probably off curing cancer or working at RSI), but the camp gets 85 really well-rounded, interesting, and very qualified students with a penchant for science. That’s typically why the students do so well in college admissions…

Matriculation for NJGSS 2010 was something like 17 kids to Princeton, 10 to Harvard, 8 to MIT, 4 to Yale, 2 to Brown, 10 to Penn, 10 to Columbia, and a bunch more I’m probably forgetting. Fingers crossed NJGSS 2011 will be as, if not more, successful as other camps in the past!

Could I run my stats by you, just to see my odds?

Sure, PM them to me.

Also if anyone has any more questions, feel free to ask.

THIS THREAD IS TOO CRUCIAL TO FALL INTO OBSCURITY. So who’s getting those nominations?

seriously. this was one of the best experiences ever. everyone is so smart, but they are also really nice and it’s not competitive there at all. that being said, it’s pretty hard to get in, but it’s worth a shot if you get nominated.
much of luck!

Yaayayayayayay

woooooohooooooo

So, whos excited to go? One more month till we find out !

anyone? 10char bump ;)

Lol from Hudson County here. I’m actually really nervous, this is like the only thing over the summer that fits into my schedule lol. I got a whole bunch of stuff since the application due date which are now too late to inform them (like qualifying for ISEF). I just hope it’s all enough :X

^Can’t you email them an update? It can’t hurt…

Btw, does anyone know, if we get in, by what date do we have to inform them that we’re going? I applied to several other programs that would allow me to do individual research, but they’re all crazy selective.

I don’t wanna irritate them. Their Facebook page posted “It is way late to be asking to submit more materials. These were due in mid February. Doesn’t anyone believe deadlines are really deadlines?”
So I’ll just wait.

Supercools: oh wow…they sound annoyed. That’s kind of unfair though. A lot of other programs accept updates (Clarks and RSI do I think).

LOL about their message concerning the essays. I think mine was two pages? I thought they said the word limit was 2500 words though…

yeah, good thing it wasn’t directed to me particularly. Poor applicant.

Three dayssss. :open_mouth: Does anyone know what time decisions come out?

in the past it was around 9/10 am i think, but who knows. oh my gosh i’m so anxious!

anyone else nervous?
