Looking for advise on how to evaluate NJIT Honors College as against Calstate and UCs
Student stats:
- California resident Asian,
- All As in high school, 6APs
- Good community service record & volunteer leaderships
- No sports of significance
After bachelors degree, wants to work (no masters degree plan as of now)
Admitted to
- Dorman Honors at NJIT - B.S Data Science
- Cal State San Diego & Cal State Long Beach - both BS Computer Science
Waiting for:
- University of California - UCLA - BS in CS, UCSD - BS in Data Science, UCI - BS Informatics
Costs:
- Cost of attendance at NJIT will be the least considering scholarship offered. UCs and Cal state cost will be higher - as she will have full tuition (in-state) & room/board.
My questions:
- Does graduating from NJIT Honors college provide more opportunities in the job market when compared to Calstate - SD & LB?
- UCs with this kind of stats seem a reach - but assuming we get UCI, how would that compare to a NJIT honors college?
Thanks!
Probably each will have an advantage with local / regional employers.
Also, is her preferred type of employment more in statistics / data science, or general computing (CS)?
Thank you @ucbalumnus, preferred employment is in data science. Second choice is around HCI. The Data Science (Computational Option) started at NJIT only in 2021, I believe. Therefore there is not much of a way to get data points on what alums are doing after they graduate. The Masters program however has been around for some time.
I am unable to help her decide, as I am not sure how much a “honors” name tag adds to the value or overall ranking of the college & course.
Being in an honors program may give some additional perks at the college which could improve the experience (or may not, if it comes with additional required courses that the student is not interested in). It really varies from one college to another, so the student should check whether the honors program at the specific college is of benefit enough to matter in choosing between it and some other college (with or without an honors program).
Thank you @ucbalumnus Planning to visit NJIT over spring break to help understand the environment, experience and such. Will keep you posted!
