My DD has admission to 7yr BSMD at NJMS. She has been admitted to NJIT (full-ride), Rutgers Newark ($24k/yr cost) & TCNJ ($42K/yr cost, though she might get merit aid of ~$20K). We’re not considering TCNJ strongly because of cost. Also, she is more familiar with big city atmosphere vs TCNJ’s small campus, hopes to do research at Rutgers from first year, and likes the NJ neighboring areas (outside of inner city) for their eateries and quick access to NY. She hopes to have friends at TCNJ to hang out with from time to time, and is ok not going to school there if we can give her the money instead
Concerns we (parents) have for NJIT are quality of school (is it ok?) and high male:female ratio (is that a problem?). We’re fine paying the $24k/yr for Rutgers if that is significantly a better UG to go to. DD’s point is:
isn’t it right across the road from NJIT? how much advantage will I have specifically enrolled in Rutgers vs enrolled in NJIT with access to Rutgers (and money in my pocket)?
Some folks we know are going to TCNJ not NJIT. No insight why ? Biology department is federated and there is not much difference between Rutgers-Newark and NJIT in terms of quality.
TCNJ is the preferred destination for BSMD candidates, and for us, the difference is over $20K/year. So, yes, TCNJ might be more desirable, but DD is also considering NJIT with some $$ in her pocket instead. We’ll be at NJIT this weekend and at TCNJ maybe two weeks later.
Hey Mom22DDs,
I am a rising senior in high school who is VERY interested in the NJMS BS/MD program. I have a graduated friend who is also going into the NJIT/NJMS program, so this is definitely a great option!
I do however have 3 questions because I am a little confused :
When you apply to NJMS BS/MD, do you HAVE to apply to EACH OF the undergrads separately (Rutgers,NJIT)? Or is there one application directly for the BS/MD program that makes you available for both Rutgers and NJIT?
How competitive is the program? Like what was your daughters/sons STATS if possible (sorry if i sound too nosy :0 )
